The medical thing is shots for two kinds of hepatitis,
typhoid and a (possibly surplus) tetanus booster.
Probably Hepatitis A & B. Typhoid makes sense, as does also
Tetanus .. if you're going through all of this, you might want to
throw in a shot for Yellow Fever, as this combination of 'stuff' will
pretty much let you go anywhere for the next 5 years IIRC.

advised to use 100% DEET. Anyone out there used Doxyhexal?
I think I've used Larium. 1/week for a period starting before and for
a month afterwords; main side effects were some equilibrium
adjustments and 'vivid dreams'.

warned to be especially careful withy sunscreen.
Kind of sounds like you'll really burn. Might be worth getting a
couple of tanning booth sessions at home to start building up a base
tan ASAP.
Quote: And what brands of insect repellent will get close to
100% DEET?
100% concentrations can still be found, but have become less popular,
due to a combination of the chemistry being 'unheathy', to both humans
and plastics.
The stuff in the 30% range is generally considered to be just about as
effective if applied at slightly more frequent rates ... roughly every
8 hours instead of every 12 hours. Since you'll probably be washing
off some when diving, you'll want to reapply anyway (ditto sunscreen),
so the difference should be negigible

Anyway, even though I believe that the conditions are
likely to be a bit primitive for the non-diving SO, it
looks like it should be a great dive trip. (Of course,
I'll look at providing some photos afterwards.)
I'll definitely want to hear the non-diver SO report too :-)

I carry Sawyer Max Deet in my All Terrain Vehicle for use in the Florida
Everglades. I don't really need 100% Deet, but carry it because I get more
repellant in a smaller container. I think Cutter used to make, and may
still make, 100% Deet.
Probably a better question is what products can you get there. I doubt all
US products would be exported to Australia. It would not seem to make good
economic sense. Anyway, a Google search on 100% Deet gave me the following
http://www.nextag.com/100-deet/search-html . There are several brands
shown. The Sawyer that I use is low odor. I can't say that I've ever
noticed its smell.

Quote: OK, to put it in perspective, Keith is charging
$0.035/litre and Ron is charging $0.03/litre.
My local is approx (fast numbers) .02-.025 USD / liter HE, get a little
break with volume, and get continuous blending which eliminates tanks
needing to be near empty. North Florida I believe can be little lower,
location dependent, but pp fills.
Local O2 I don't bother to ask, membrane system, I let the shop crunch
the numbers, but nitrox goes for .002+ USD liter IIRC. Membrane will do
about 38%, so only needs a little pp "boost" for 30/30 or 50%. |

I can report on what I see, but the SO has to wait
a couple of weeks for a trip with her kids to Fiji so
you won't get a report from her. This is the first
year that the September break from the university
where I work hasn't been at the same time as the kids'
school holidays (Of course, they get two weeks off and
I only get one in any case.) It's an advantage in one
respect since I'm not traveling during the school
holidays -- it's always hard to get air tickets then
and prices tend to be higher. As it is, I was able to
use FF's for one leg of the trip -- something that
would be impossible in the normal school holidays.
So, she's taking her kids one place and I'm going
off by myself -- so conditions for the non-diver aren't
a consideration for me. I'm expecting to be in
dormitory type accommodations with a shared toilet/bath
facility. Possibly a bit primitive for some tastes --
but when I did the Spoilsport out of Cairns I was in
the bunk in the bow next to the chain locker. It
didn't have a view, but it was cheap. And I got the
same food and the same dives as the folks in the
expensive cabins.
The link to where I'll be staying is:
http://www.tulagidive.com.sb/Accomodation.htm
I'm not expecting air conditioning.
As far as I have been able to determine, there's little
or no shopping or night life on Tulagi. So if you aren't
diving, the entertainment is sitting on a beach and
"vegging out" or touring the historical sites from the
WWII battle.
