Uncommon Natural History Set w\Hand-colored Plates

Jardine, Sir William THE NATURALIST’S LIBRARY Edinburgh: W.H.
Lizars & Sterling & Kenney, 1834-1843. 12mo. 42 volumes,
incomplete. 1st Edition. Bound in contemporary cloth, titles stamped
in gilt. Profusely illustrated with stunning hand-colored plates of
mammals, insects, fish and birds. Edward Lear did some of the
illustrations in the Ornithology series (Parrots).

Various degrees of rubbing, bumping, chipping, spotting, fading and
cracked hinges. Many pages unopened. Several ownership
inscriptions. One volume is lacking its backstrip.

“Mammalia” and “Icthylogy” have all volumes called for present.
“Ornithology” is lacking volume one and “Entomology” is also missing
volume one. “Entomology” has duplicates of volumes 3, 4, 5, & 7.

In “Ornithology”, vol. VII has one plate lacking (#11) and vol. VIII
has three plates lacking (#’s 5, 7, & 9). In “Entomology”, vol. IV
has one plate lacking (#4) and vol. VI is lacking a leaf from the
table of contents. In “Ichthyology”, vol. II is lacking one plate
(#3). In “Mammalia”, plate #8 is torn, much of the text is loose in
the binding and is lacking plate #20. Of the volumes that are
present, a total of seven plates are missing.

Volumes range from Fair to Very Good condition overall.
