This is a test post... Google has deleted almost all of their Usenet
groups today. It's made a lot of people disappointed. Some speculate
that Google is going to no longer carry any Usenet group at all, which
would include rec.music.dementia. What's strange is that not all of
the groups have been deleted. Is it a temporary outage, with Google
planning to restore service later, or is Google starting a rolling
deletion?

I can't say for sure, but I just checked my account there, and all of
my groups are fine. Several alt. groups and some rec. groups.
Just fyi, I was using Time Warner, which HAS dropped all usenet. I
think I would have heard for sure about Google on one group I am on if
there is something going on with them. But I will ask there.

I had motzarella recommended to me, and it is working fine. You do
need a news reader to use it. I use FreeAgent. The bad news for many
here is that they don't carry the binaries.
http://www.motzarella.org/
It is free, and in the couple of weeks I have been using it I haven't
had any problems, other than it seems a little slow, but that could be
my computer.

Not sure if this was useful or not.

Are there other USENET web sites around? Not sure if they exist..

My ISP still carries USENET but for how much longer I don't know.

I haven't used an ISP's Usenet feed for a couple of years now...I subscribe to
Newsguy, which not only gives me groups access via the Web at work (where I
don't have the proxy settings to get me through the firewall any other way), but
also has a regular NNTP path so when I'm home I can download using Xnews
(Newsguy's web-based binaries access works *some* of the time, but the interface
is a little odd)....r

I remember Free Agent and Forte Agent. I registered Forte Agent back
in 1995 or so. Unfortunately I've long since lost my CD and
registration key since then. I've also tried Gravity. The good news
is that Gravity appears to have been open sourced!

Nice. I had motzarella also recommended to me too, as well as these
websites:

http://news.aioe.org
http://www.albasani.net
http://reader.greatnowhere.com

I haven't checked all of these out yet, so YMMV.

For web-based news reading, albeit with a crummy interface that only
shows 10 posts at a time, there's this:

http://news-reader.org/rec.music.dementia/

There's other newsgroups as well. Substitute in the name of the
newsgroup you want, in the URL. Not sure how many total newsgroups
they carry.

Just a quick follow up.
From what I have been able to find out from others, there must have
been a glitch, no reports of Google going Usenetless or dropping any
groups..

The only thing I HAVE noticed is that when you post to USENET via
Google, it sometimes takes HOURS for your posts to show up.
