Howdy to the Group,
TWC is my Internet Service Provider and how I get to this group to
read the various postings.
Just a heads up to any subscribers to this Group who may be accessing
the Group via TWC's RoadRunner Internet Service.
As of June 23, 2008 TWC will no longer provide access to any usenet
newsgroup feeds to any servers.
I'm making a formal complaint to TWC and asking for a partial refund.
It may be an exercise in futillity, but I'll feel better.
Have a good Day!
Pete

Pete, can you explain more? Are they just blocking Google Groups or
what?

Did they give any reason for this?

Hello Elkaholic,
According to TWC and RoadRunner they say they are
discontinuing direct access to UseNet Newsgroups due to "low
subscriber usage".
I don't see how they can restrict "Google Groups" since that
is an indirect way to get to the various newsgroups by way of
"Google".

Yet another cave-in to the nanny-state.

I assume Google Groups will still be available since they don't offer
binary groups. But then reading GG is painful enough.

What they don't say in that article is why usenet groups are being
targeted. My assumption is that it is because they allow for
anonymous sharing of information. Anonymity is bad for attorney
generals who are trying to track and prosecute child pornographers and
other criminals. Anonymity is good for those of us who don't trust
websites to keep our personal information protected.

Pete, I've never been to Oregon, but I've heard the elk hunting there
can be rather challenging. I've only lived/hunted in CO for 7 years
and have only one set of bull antlers hanging on the wall. However,
our group has been more successful than average with a ~50% success
rate. But, as my assumed name implies, I'm addicted.

How did you get the meat out? I have thought about hunting over there,
but the thought of packing an elk out of a mile deep gorge just made my
back hurt.

My ISP contracts with Giganews for usenet access. Last time I checked,
admittedly several years ago, Giganews allowed personal subscriptions.

Larry,
Hey, Thanx for the info on giganews. Since giganews has a company
headquarters here in Texas I'll probably subscribe with them.
On to your question.
We (my brother and I) pack in and out. We have gone in light with
only two horses. The most horse power we have used was five. Three
or four horses works best. My brother lives in Oregon so I show up
and get to work.
We apply for controlled hunt tags that fall in Nov. By that time of
the year frost happens every night in the hell's canyon area which
gives us some leeway with fresh meat.
Most of Hell's Canyon is now a wilderness area so pack horses or mules
are the only way to get to Elk country. This works for us. Dress the
carcass and hang the meat ASAP in trees close by the kill site. Return
to hunt camp. Return to the kill site the next morning with horses
and pack tack. Pack meat back to camp and hang again. And, when the
second hunter is successful do all over again. Depending on second
kill site we may pack to end of road and hang meat in the horse
trailer. When it is time to break camp the first pack out is with
meat to the horse trailer. The second pack out trip is with the camp
gear. We normally camp one night at the end of road spot both going
in and coming out. Depending on the situation we rely on mother
nature's refrigeration for as many as 6 days. Oregon 2008 controlled
hunt results for antelope, deer and elk just became available at the
ODFW website. No luck for me in this year's draw.

I read far less "evil overlord" into this than most. And perhaps it is
because I also used to participate on news.groups and now
news.groups.proposals. The migration away from Usenet is not due to
some great government conspiracy, but rather because of "Average Joe
User" needs and demands.

In other words, Usenet is dying because fewer and fewer people are using
it as the medium of choice for group discussions. Even me, someone who
has had an email address since the mid-1980's, used Usenet since very
nearly its inception, and been the moderator of newsgroups, often finds
myself enjoying the more full featured benefits of a vBulletin board
over the plain vanillaness of Usenet.

At one time, I participated in roughly a dozen newsgroups on a regular
basis. Today, rec.hunting is the only one. Compare that to the
web-based boards I read on an almost daily basis: 2 "outdoors" groups
(1 for waterfowl and 1 for saltwater fishing), 2 for homeschooling, 3
"geek" oriented boards, and even one for my cell phone.

My attitude towards this is a Bible verse:
Ecclesiastes 3:1 & 2
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under
heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, ..."

I am pretty much of the opinion that it is pretty close to the time for
Usenet to die.

I'm going to admit my ignorance here. So is this NG a usenet group or
not? I thought that was the original poster's concern - that his ISP
was going to block access to this group?

Not quite - they are going to drop their entire Usenet server. Meaning
they would drop ALL newsgroups (not just picking on rec.hunting).

There are lots of legitimate reasons why an ISP would do this -
insufficient use by their customers to justify the time & expense of
keeping it running, being the chief reason.

It is likely administrative ignorance, coupled with the new agreement
between the Feds and large ISPs to block transmission of child
pornography on the Internet. Binary newsgroups are the biggest path of
child porn promotion on the net. Instead of just blocking binaries,
they decide to shut down their news servers entirely.

Actually that's not true. Binary newsgroups were the biggest path of
porn on the 'net - back in the early 1990's.

Websites are several orders of magnitude bigger.
