NEW YORK — The New York Police Department property division has
failed to properly secure and track thousands of guns because of
sloppy storage and antiquated record-keeping, a city audit has found.
City Comptroller William Thompson, who announced the audit results on
Tuesday, suggested the property division was in so much disarray that
public safety was at risk.
"It's disgraceful that the NYPD has not taken the necessary steps to
protect New Yorkers from the very firearms that it confiscates in
order to protect our city," Thompson said in a statement.
Because of sloppy paperwork and other problems, the department
initially failed to produce 94 of 324 guns asked for in the audit. The
weapons eventually turned up, but only after repeated inquiries and
several weeks, the report said.
The audit recommended the NYPD develop an electronic database to help
keep track of all property, including guns, cash and narcotics. The
department told Thompson's office that it believes its current
property practices are sound, and that it is already in the process of
computerizing records.

they had to give the NYPD officers a chance to return them from their
personal collections.....I would not be surprised that the missing guns
were the quality guns.

This is not good news for the gun grabbing mental cases. Now there are tons
of guns out on the street, mostly in the hands of criminals. How do I know?
Psychological probability. If the guns were stolen from the police, good
honest people didn't do it. If a crooked cop is involved, then he sold to
criminals. Either way you look at it, gun grabbers are wrong. If NYC had the
laws we have here in Florida, most, if not almost all of those guns would
still be in the possession of the law-abiding public, whether kept at home
for protection or carried on their person with a permit. Good job, NYPD. You
just proved gun grabbers wrong.

Here in Oregon the Douglas County Sheriff's Department just held an
auction of confiscated firearms. You had to have an FFL to bid.
Proceeds from the auction are being used to fund law enforcement
programs.
I find it interesting that the local newspaper never published a story
about it. I found out after the fact, through the Rod and Gun Club
newsletter.
Anyway, the guns are now back in law-abiding citizens' hands, where they
belong.

Perhaps, as these guns are cataloged one by one into a computer, an
evaluation of whether they are illegal arms (filed off serial number,
illegal conversion to automatic, etc.) which must be destroyed after the
associated cases are settled, confiscated guns taken from their rightful
owners by unconstitutional means -- and that should therefore be returned to
their rightful owners, or guns needed for current cases. Then they could
auction off the remainder to the CITIZENS of NYC, to raise a little coin.
Just an idea.

They SHOULD be auctioned off to FFLs;destroying them would be wasteful and
not fiscally prudent.
IOW;criminally misusing public funds.(paying to destroy them instead of
generating a positive revenue from the valuables,as they do with other
items.)

True statement. How many of the public would tolerate them doing that with
other recovered property? What if their policy was to melt down all
recovered cars to prevent them from being bought and used in the commission
of crimes? Someone might even use it as a getaway car or to drive into a
crowd. If they sold only to FFLs they would have no more liability ( and
probably less, since they are a government agency) than any other
manufacturer or wholesaler who sells to legal dealers. Besides, who better
to run a background check on a prospective buyer than the cops themselves.
This PC crap by police chiefs pandering to the libs is sickening.

A great source of revenue. Apply this to D.C. I wonder how many otherwise
legal guns are confiscated in D.C. every year from pimps, junkies, murders,
etc. As long as the gun is otherwise clean and legal, this could be a
goldmine to raise funds for the D.C. police.
