Truly unimpressive article on USA Today. Is some other people
seriously entrusting the FIFA ranking to compare football NTs?

It's USA Today. What do you expect? :-)

Actually, Millward is an AP guy and isn't always that bad. But I agree
with you. My sense is that there is more parity than ever in soccer,
at least amongst the 5-7 usual favorites. I don't know anybody in
their right mind who would bet on Argentina or Brazil over a European
power (or vice versa) unless the odds were really generous.

Oh Gawd, what ignorance. Did anyone bother to tell him that Argentina
and Brazil jumped ahead of four Euro nations last June when Fifa
decided to devalue the points gained from the World Cup by 50%?

Has he seen recent results these South American Giants have had vs
European teams? Spain 2 - 1 over Argentina, Portugal 2-0 over Brazil.
England and Turkey drawing Brazil, Norway beating Argentina,
Switzerland drawing Argentina, etc?

A bit of a joke. Looks like bought and paid for journalism!

I'll take any of the top four to six Europeans over these two at the
moment...in a serious match that is.

I don't see how this is possible given some of Argentina's and
Brazil's recent results, and against Europeans too:

August 16, 2006 - Brazil 1 - 1 Norway
Novebr 15, 2006 - Brazil 2 - 1 Switzerland
Februry 7, 2007 - Brazil 0 - 2 Portugal
June 1, 2007 - Brazil 1 - 1 England (and against ENGLAND of all
teams?????)
June 5, 2007 - Brazil 0 - 0 Turkey
June 27, 2007 - Brazil 0 - 2 Mexico
Oct 14, 2007 - Brazil 0 - 0 Colombia
Nov 18, 2007 - Brazil 1 - 1 Peru
Februr 6, 2008 - Brazil 1 - 0 Ireland (dire Ireland)
March 26, 2008 - Brazil 1 - 0 Sweden
May 31, 2008 - Brazil 3 - 2 Canada (Canada?!?)
June 6, 2008 - Brazil 0 - 2 Venezuela
June 18, 2008 - Brazil 0 - 2 Peru

Pretty dire...

Argentina might even be worse off:

Oct 11 2006, Argentina 1 - 2 SPAIN
June 2, 2007, Argentina 1 - 1 Switzerland
June 5, 2007, Argentina 4 - 3 Algeria (ALGERIA?!?!)
Aug 22, 2007, Argentina 1 - 2 Norway
Nov 20, 2007, Argentina 1 - 2 Colombia
June 08, 2008, Argentina 0 - 0 USA
June 15, 2008, Argentina 1 - 1 Uruguay
June 18, 2008, Argentina 0 - 0 Brazil

Against European opposition both Spain and Portugal have owned
Argentina and Brazil respectively in recent years, and other mid
tiered European squads have either kept them at bay, beat them (see
Norway and Switzerland) or have barely been beaten such as Ireland and
Sweden by Brazil.

How they are a top of the rankings is anyone's guess.
