After slow but steady progress in my shooting accuracy, I find that in the
last couple of times I've been to the range, i can't seem to hit the broad
side of a barn (okay, exaggeration, but my groups are about twice as big as
they have been and often "offset" from the point of aim considerably). Is
having a "slump" like that normal or should I be looking at a specific
problem such as a mechanical issue with the rifle, a bad batch of ammo, or
maybe having picked up a bad habit. I don't think I'm doing anything
different shooting, but I suppose having picked up some kind of bad habit is
possible.
I'm shooting a Ruger 10/22 that I bought new about 3 months ago. I've
probably shot 2-4 thousand rounds through it since acquiring it. The
particular "slump" involves three trips to the range: Monday, Yesterday,
and today. At the end of day Monday, I used up the last of the Aguila Match
Rifle ammunition that I'd been shooting. Yesterday and today I used the
Federal "Champion" that I had been using before switching to the Aguila.
Back when I made the switch, I found I got slightly smaller groups with the
Aguila than with the Federal. My current groups are too large for that
difference to account for (and the first of the three days was with the
Aguila anyway). At the start of today's session, I noticed that the
takedown screw was slightly loose. I tightened it, and checked that the
sights were tight (they were) but still had problems.
On the bright side, I took my boss with me to the range yesterday and he
seemed to enjoy himself quite a bit. I also let him know that he's always
welcome to join me when I go down to the range during lunch (usually 2-3
times per week). Recruiting is fun. ;)

Slow down, take a deep breath and start shooting again, after you go through
the basics. Check your position, have you got your natural point of aim?
Are your positions correct and your bones are supporting the rifles weight
or are you using muscles and becoming fatigued? Are you focusing on the
front sight? Are you following through correctly? How about your trigger
control are you "snatching" the trigger or letting the shot come as a
surprise?
Have fun!

It's easy to eliminate the gun and the sights. Use some kind of
support/rest, sandbag or whatever, and see what kind of groups you get.
