Took all three syrup feeders down for service (noticed that one was
cloudy a while ago).

Took longer to get them recycled because it turns out the ant stakes
aren't doing the job--will have to work on that some more.

When I hauled the three out and hung the two that hang from the bell
post, then hung the third on the house-eave and turned back to admire my
work and ponder the ant-stake question I saw a hummer topping off and
depart.

Little critter must have been hiding in the tree waiting for me.

JIT service!

The easiest way to solve your ant problem is with ant guards. Walmart
sometimes carries them and there are lots of them on the web.

I tried ant guards (several designs) and none of them worked well for me
for various reasons. (And we have had so much rain this year that I'm
guessing they wouldn't work because of that.)

If the stakes don't work (we need to keep the carpenter ants out of the
house too) I may try going through all the ideas again.

I've thought about trying an idea that worked for a while when I was
trying to control squirrels (sill me) with packing tape wound
sticky-side-out on the support wires.

I've tried that strategy, but using electrical tape since that's what
was handy. It worked for a while, but pretty soon (a few days, if
memory serves) the stickum got covered with enough dust and other junk
that the ants could walk right over it. If you don't mind replacing
the tape regularly it should work OK.

I tried petroleum jelly which, like sticky tape, worked until the ants
plowed a narrow furrow through the gunk and merrily swam and drowned
in the sugar water. I'm resigned to changing the water more often.

And to buying "bushy tail mix" and peanuts for the squirrels.
