In this morning's As:
http://www.as.com/opinion/articulo/paradoja-caso-luis-aragones/dasopi/20080701dasdaiopi_3/Tes
In this article about Aragonés, Relaño shows that he misunderstands
why Spain won. He attributes it to tikitaka, whereas when the team
played really well, it played vertically, opening spaces, filtering
beautiful passes forward and attacking through the flanks. What he
says shows me that he does not understand the game. Tikitaka is a
failing strategy, what some South Americans used to call "fulbito", a
negative adjective to denote something that looks good and achieves
nothing. Barcelona played tikitaka for the last two seasons and
achieved nothing. On the final and against Russia, Xavi, the
figurehead of tikitaka, did not play tikitaka, he played
strategically, thinking about the opponent's goal, not about keeping
the ball for a while and then thinking of something.
If the Spanish people are told by the press that tikitaka won the
Euro, they are being deceived. They are also being told by some pseudo
experts that tikitaka is the traditional style of Spain, a total
falsehood. Spain had never played like this. Whatever you want to call
this style, it happened because of the group of players and because
Aragonés hit on the right eleven men for the job and for the right
positions for those men. Our traditional style is "furia", not
tikitaka and not the style shown in the recent Euro tournament.
Best,
