at Sarasota.
The bird is an osprey, accoding to wife
black beak
It is otherwise gray
Size of adult chicken, or a little smaller
It has small head which may be 1/2 blackish
It is stopped on grass and appears to be stalking |

Just some random thoughts:
Gray is a very non-descriptive color. Depending on lighting conditions many
birds can appear to be gray despite the presence of other colors.
A little smaller than an adult chicken is a pretty good sized bird.
Ospreys eat fish (99%). Stalking something on the grass does not sound like
Osprey behavior.
An adult Osprey is larger than an adult chicken. It has a wingspan of up to
6 feet.
Osprey's have white on the upper and lower part of their head. You mention
no white in your description.
Are you near water? Is the bird stalking something near the water? Is the
bird walking around in the yard? How large is the beak in relation to the
head? Is the head partially white? How long are it's legs? Can you see long
curvy talons?
Just a wild guess (and its pretty extreme in the wild department) relating
to size and behavior, assuming that there is some water nearby . . . a Green
Heron.

i'm having puter problems, this could be it, but i doubt it links,
it's too .....
I use tinyurl.com to prune these long beasties to something like:http://tinyurl.com/3w87y9
I've not seen that particular guy, but I have seen Herons of other sorts
around the country, and some of them will study a spot where they think
they saw lunch for the longest time--motionless, neck outstretched (but
cocked)...you think they will tip over onto their beaks.
