A long time ago I was offered a Remington single shot rifle I had never
heard of. It turns out a little research identified it as a
Remington-Hepburn. One of the firemen was selling it and it had been in his
wife's family for a long time. I remember it had some stock damage but the
metal was all intact. While it did interest me I passed because it was
chambered for .40-70 cartridge that nobody new anything about. I remember
hearing the words "stright Sharps" mentioned as a possible chambering.
Besides the chambering the .40 caliber didn't sound like anything I would be
able to find bullets for.
One of the other shooters did buy it and started working on producing
ammunition for it. One day he pulled one of the cartridges he made out of
pocket for my inspection and I remember that the case head was soldered onto
the body, made me glad I passed it up. Now I look back on it as a real loss
Lyman offers dies, Track of the Wolf offers brass, and there are several .40
calibner bullets moulds availible. A few minutes on the internet make
finding and feeding an old relic a lot more practical. I imagine making the
rifle useful has also brought the prices up.

When I was stationed in Munich in the early 60s, I bought a primo Luger, an
S42 all matching numbers except for the magazine. Paid $55 for it over the
counter at the GI Rod and Gun club, after a background check by the MPs of
course. Not long after II got back to the states, I was hard up for dough
and sold it to a private party for what I paid for it. That same gun would
cost me upwards of $2000 today. - CW

About ten years ago at the Ohio Gun Collectors Show, I took a pass on a
mint condition, left handed, German made, Weatherby in .340 Wby Mag.
asking price was $700.
I also missed out on a Safari Arms Renegade Left Hand .45 Auto for $650
Auto Ordinance Thompson semi auto version of the Tommy Gun in 10mm
with the case and drum magazine for $850. Try and find one of these today.

When I was ststioned at Blytheville AFB, Arkansas, in 61, the pawn shop across
the road from the main gate had a 45-70 Trap Door Springfield for $45.00, and an
old remington Rolling Block for $35.00. One of my cousins brought a Luger back
from WWII. His mom was terrified of guns & threw it out in the trash. Last
week, a local gun buy back took in a WWII Luger, for which they paid the guy 50
bucks.
