This is sad to read. I seriously enjoyed visiting Mount St. Helens
when we were in Washington. We cruised all the way up from Oregon,
visiting Crater Lake, the Timberline Lodge, hiked through one of the
lava tubes, etc.. Nothing like it.

I plan on visiting MSH this summer, but frankly it's going to be a
quick zip in, see the volcano, take some pictures, and get out since
I'm on a budget. Maybe I'll get gas at a local business, but that's
about it. MSH also has one serious impediment to tourism: there are
zero connecting roads.
If it were declared a National Park or placed in the NPS system, I
don't see how any of that really changes. It's a day trip from
Portland, and pretty much that's where I intend on staying. |

Just as a follow-up. I thought about going there (East side) via one
of the county roads as a side trip of my drive from Mr Rainier to
Portland. However - the MSHNVM map seems to indicate that the bridge
on the road will be closed from July to September of this year. |
