$3.778 in Maryville and Alcoa, TN on June 21. Same weekend as Honda Hoot in
neighboring Knoxville.

$4.29 for regular here. Was $4.19 Diesel still holding at $4.89
When gas was under $3/gallon, I got by on $20/wk. Now, I just cut back
on my trips a bit and have been at a steady $25/wk.
If I lived a couple of miles closer to work, I'd buy a bicycle instead.
I bicycled 6 miles each way for about 6 weeks once. The road had no
shoulder, it frequently rained on me, and I'll swear the wind blew
against me morning and afternoon. It's been a 30 years since I did
that.
I checked into riding the bus to work about 20 years ago. It took 2
hours to get to work by bus as opposed to 20 minutes by my own
vehicle, so I didn't take the bus. I tried to find a home near a bus
stop 5 years ago in prep for old age when I changed homes, but I ended
up being about 1 mile away from one.
As of this summer however, they are building a Target store and
commercial center (mall) slightly less than 1 mile away from me.
They're doing the earthwork now, so I'd guess it won't open for
roughly a year and a half. Walmart was going to build a Super Walmart
across the street from them but I heard that was put on hold. On the
one hand I'll miss the forest and wildlife that now inhabit the area,
but on the other it will be nice to be able to walk to a store instead
of always riding. I just hope they don't build a pizza or ice cream
parlor in there too. Or a Mexican restaurant. Subway and a
Blockbusters would be OK.
I get 40 mpg for 6 months (almost 6 anyway) and 12 mpg for 6 months,
so I'm averaging 26 mpg. My commute is 25 miles, but let's say it's
26 so I burn a gallon a day for work on an annual average. Let's not
consider increased maintenance and insurance costs that result from
having two vehicles.

I used to bike 7 miles every morning to get to high school, 2 miles to
work after that, then 6 miles home. 16 miles round trip for me is a bit
much at my age now, but 10-12 would be doable.
Of course, doing so from where I live now would require traversing some
not-so-good sections of Springfield (including the entire length of
Carew St from I-91) to get home at 10pm some nights.. |

Cycling is a good way to stay healthy provided the route accommodates
it and a chunk of fat doesn't break lose and clot as it did to that TV
guy recently.

It's also relatively easy to get your ass run over on a
bicycle. Motorcycles are hard enough to keep away
from cars, just substitute the variable of a slow mov-
ing bicycle. |
