Why can't I attract hummingbirds? I have a feeder out with hummingbird
nectar, have tried making my own nectar, have planted flowers that are
supposed to attract them, we have a water feature, etc, but no hummers! Any
other ideas?

You might try looking for a BRIGHT red sheet or bedcover, or throw, or
something like that, and hang it from a clothesline, or run a rope across
part of your yard and hang it from there... A fairly large area of bright
red in an open part of your yard may well serve as a beacon to hummers
flying by...
On the other hand, if none ARE flying by right now, this may not help,
either... Otherwise, I'd say you've done most of the right things to make
your yard attractive to hummers... Keep your nectar fresh...
We have four feeders; two in front and two in back, and have loaded the
place with planted and potted plants that attract hummers, as well as bird
baths and misters both front and back. But we also have the advantage that
most of our hummers are here year 'round, and several generations of them
have literally grown up in our yard...

I am not an expert, but it looks to me like a lot of birds (hummers
included) are creatures of habit.
If you didn't have the best offer in town when they arrived they may not
find you.
Have you seen hummers nearby?
(We only have one (pair--I think, only see one bird at a time, usually)
most years. We had two (pairs?) last year--that is, we saw two birds at
a time lots of times. I have only seen two birds once this year.)

Try a couple of flower shaped, tin lawn ornaments with the colored
marble in the center. They can be found in Dollar stores on a 2 foot
metal stake. It will catch their eye. |

I haven't seen any myself, but hear from neighbours that they have seen
them. I will just have to keep trying!

Carolyn, my brother lives in southern Ontario too and says his hummers have
disappeared. I think they may be busy with their families at this point ...
at least the females, anyway. Pretty soon, you should start seeing them
again at feeders. The same thing is happening up here right now. My
feeders were busy as could be up until about 5 days ago.
Have faith, they'll come back.
