Maltese in pain from rabies shot

Our Maltese, 12yrs old, got a rabies booster shot Saturday morning.
Today, 24hrs later, he's really in pain in the rump area, sensitive,
not eating. He barely walks, and cannot get up or down from things. He
shivers quite a bit when standing, or even lying down. He nips when
handled. I'm wondering how long this should go on before we seek
medical care. I'm a retiree on a limited budget.
