Hi,
I was wondering if anybody has a solution to protect kids/children
from accidentally running into the bars.
We have are table in the middle of the living room. I have 3 young
kids, and they can easily get hurt by the protruding bars. Is there
some type of protection to put on the table, probably around the
bars. Some one suggested padding around each bar, but that would be
too much hassle to remove each one when we wanted to play. Maybe some
board with hanging edges covering the bars to put over the table?
If anyone has any ideas, let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Anthony,
There are a number of creative solutions, but none are are actively
sold or marketed by any of the manufacturers. One, as you suggest, is
a board covering the rods. This can be in the form of a wood or
plywood table-top that extends across the whole table larger than the
reach of the rods on all sides. Kind of bulky, but it can then also
serve as a kind of tall table around which you could put bar stools.
Another idea is to mount a shelf-like extension in between the goalie
and two-row on the outside of the table that is flat (horizontal but
mounted to the side of the table with a vertical support) and extends
as far out as those two rods. Since the non-handle side of those two
rods are the usual culprits as far as which rods children run into,
you'll probably be okay just mounting over those and not any others
(mounting over others obstructs your hand movement, so it really
wouldn't work anyway).
Alternatively, if the table you have has rods that when pulled all the
way in still slightly extend out the hole on the other side, you could
buy some small soft rubber balls (maybe at a pet store) and cut a hole
in them and push them onto the ends of the rods -- that would leave
your table unaltered but protect kids' eyes from the ends. However,
if you have a Tornado or other table where the rods pull all the way
into the side leaving no rod ends exposed, then you have to fix a plug
to the rod ends that can be further extended into the rubber balls.
Last option, you could buy rod-locks from rod-lock.com that hold the
rods in place -- you just pull all the rods as far in (towards you as
you stand holding them) as they'll go; put the rod locks on and now
you'll have rods sticking out, but at least it's the handle side and
not the more dangerous rod-end side.
Having said all that, standard black insulation for plumbing pipes
available at Home Depot or somewhere would slide right onto all the
rods (you still might want to keep the rods in place with rod-locks)
and right off as needed for your own play/practice purposes -- all
while ensuring padding covers every rod when the table is not in
use.
So, what ever works for you -- hopefully I've given you something that
will work out.
Good luck!!
