We have 2 cats (brother and sister, both neutered, both have claws, 2
yrs. old) who have lived in the house all their lives. Max is
perfectly normal; he's friendly, curious, playful and an all around
great cat. His sister Alex, OTOH, is a loon. I'm not sure what
happened when we took them to the vet to be fixed, but it must have
been very traumatic for her because after she came home, she was
terrified of everyone except my 11 yr. old daughter. No one else can
touch her or even get near her; she hisses and runs if approached.
She's even nasty (hissing and spitting) to Max. I've tried really hard
to make friends with her, but she's not having any of it. =(

Anyway, in July, we were adopted by a kitten. This has been a really
good thing for Max, because now he has someone to play with; he
absolutely loves Phearless, and they seem to have a wonderful time
chasing each other, playing hall hockey with their toys, sleeping in a
kitty pile, etc. Not surprisingly though, Alex hates her.

About a week ago, I went into an almost never used, very out of the
way guest room and found that someone had been using the mattress as a
litter box; this had apparently been going on for quite some time, to
judge from the sheer volume of cat feces. The mattress was completely
ruined and had to be thrown out. I am pretty sure the culprit is Alex,
because I see both Max and Phearless using the litter box(es) on a
regular (several times a day) basis. I never see Alex, but then, to be
honest, I almost never see Alex doing anything. She hides unless the
food bowl gets empty. Anyway, I threw out the mattress and shut the
door so she couldn't get back in there. Now she's using the LR carpet.
=/

We have 4 litter boxes scattered throughout the house; they are kept
clean. We live in a huge house (2 floors, 16 rooms huge), so there
should be enough space for everybody to have their own territory.
There's no medical reason for Alex to do this; I'm sure it's just a
matter of her being pissed off (no pun intended). Is there any way to
stop this behavior? I'm getting pretty desperate and frankly, if my
daughter wasn't so attached to her, I'd be considering finding a new
home for Alex.

I've considered making Alex live outside; but I really hate to do that
to her. I've also considered making her live exclusively in my
daughter's room; but I really hate to do that to my daughter. Razz I'm
willing to consider any other suggestions anyone has...

Seeing as your feeling towards Alex are so deep, I have to imagine that you
will do what's right by her and find her a good home!

Take her to the vet and have them do an exam. She may have a bladder
infection. We recently went thru this with one of our cats...after a couple
rounds of antibiotics, the peeing and pooping on the carpet stopped and she
is using the litter box again, thank goodness.

How do you know there is no medical reason have you taken her to the vets?

Cats just don't start doing this for no reason more than likely she has a
UTI and associates the litter box with pain and that's why she's quit using
it.

Get her to the vets first before doing something stupid like putting her
outside.

You need to take the cat to the vet. Very likely a medical problem.
