I'm trying to find a book I read in about 1988/89.
The story (although this may be slightly wrong ) concerned a girl who kept
having strange dreams about another sick little girl. This may have
eventually been exposed as being a projection of herself. I think the story
also involved use of a lighthouse as a setting and possibly (although memory
fails me) some kind of symbolism with a picture drawing.
I din't quite understand the book when I read it and would love to have a
look at it now. Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds as though the book may be _Marianne dreams_ by Catherine Storr.
Some of the elements are similar, although the invalid of whom the eponymous
heroine dreams is a boy.

Sounds like _Marianne Dreams_ by Catherine Storr, which was made into the movie
_Paperhouse_ (or is it _Paper House_?). I think it may also have been published
as _The Magic Drawing Pencil_.
By the way, it's always best to put details in the subject line, as we get
zillions of book ID questions and they can be hard to keep straight --
something like "book ID: sick girl, dreams, lighthouse, drawing" would be good.
