We have a mixed breed dog that spends pretty much all her time with my wife
and me when I am home in our bedroom. She has a little cage in there that
has been there since she was a puppy. She uses the cage sometimes but most
of the time she is on the bed or a chair in there. Once in a great while
she sleeps in the cage or the chair but mostly the bed. She seems to use
the cage when she feels threatened. I know this will sound out of place but
whenever my wife and I do what married people do, she heads to the cage. It
seems like her little secure hang out when she needs it. We are redoing the
room and I want to lose the cage. I bought her a dog bed from Costco. I
say we just give her some time and she will adjust and use her dog bed. My
wife seems to think we are taking away her secure little comfort area. I
really do want to lose the cage and I think my wife does also. Any ideas
will be appreciated. Thanks.

I wouldn't get ride of the kennel I would store it some were in case you
ever need it for vetting purposes or a long trip. I have a very large kennel
in my room and would never dream of removing it it's my babies den, but she
doesn't sleep in my bed either unfortunately. Her kennel is her retreat her
safe place her castle. Mine stores her toys in there and on occasion her and
the cats hang out in there. One 42 pound dog and three cats will cram in
there and be one multi colored hair ball. Fur baby's got to love them.

I would simply pack up the crate (Don't get rid of it) and see how it goes.
All my dogs have always been crate oriented, but when a new dog moved into
their crate would look enviously at the new occupant, but always accepted
their graduation well.
Reka still seeks out her own den and sleeps in the bathtub. |

You might move the crate to an area in which the family congregates, like
the kitchen or living room. That way she'll have her den as well as her bed
in your room. I'm not sure I would like the dogs in the same room as my
wife and I (I can just imagine their puzzled look and the resulting hilarity
which would follow). However, if she's reacting as if she's afraid, and
because she spends most of the time with your wife, she may think that you
are hurting the dominant female of the house. Don't know how to help you
there.

As an afterthough, she may think she's dominant over your wife, yet unable
to protect her from you, thus causing her distress.
