I remember this book I read once, several years back. To my regret I
did notwrite down the title of this book, which I no longer remember.
I have attemptedto search for this book but I was unsuccessful. If
someone could tell me whatthe title/authoer/publisher/or ISBN of this
book is, I would be eternallygrateful.Summary (of what I can remember)
follows:The story is about a girl nammed Rom. In the story, She is an
orphan whoseparents disappeared while exploring a black hole (she was
found all alone onthe ship). In this story, Earth has banned space
travel in a sense ... you areallowed to go into outer space, but you
can never return home. One interestingfeature about this book is that
humans have the ability to travel through spaceusing their minds. They
can just go from one point to another without needinga ship, just a
space suit. Also, controlling of a space ship is done telepathicly(if
I recall correctly Rom and another person had to don special headgear
andfocus on a map and "guide" the ship to it's destination).Rom lives
in an underground colony (all the colonized worlds are
undergroundcolonies as they are barren, inhospitable, and ugly - only
by the end of thestory does this begin to change). Children are
seggregated according to age.I don't remember exactly how this works,
just that Rom is in the "middle" group,as opposed to the high group
(the high group starts at age 18 and is where kidsstart to pair off).
Rom and her friends are known as troublemakers/misfits.Rom and her
friends are given a ship and a new supervisor (they played a meantrick
on their former supervisor who refuses to go back to them so they get
anew one) and set out. One of Rom's friends is given a load of
nutri-bars (thatnot what they are called in the book but I don't
remember the name) to take onthe trip but she sends them all back. The
supervisor changes their map secretly, so the entire party ends up
going toan uncharted planet. It is so beautiful and earth-like that
they decide togive it a name. I don't remember what the name it, it
might have beenAurora or Ariel ... it was a synonym for either
beautiful or dawn. The kids noteseveral strange effects that the
planet has on them, one of it being that they'vedeveloped feelings for
one another. It turns out that those nutri-bars somehowprevent this
from happening until after the person turns 18.They find out that
there is already a group of humans living on the planet. Thesupervisor
knows about them and meets with them. One of Rom's friends decidesto
stay with the supervisor and the inhabitants of the planet. The rest
don'twant to but are kidnapped and forced to live with them.Rom and
her friends do escape onto the ship (iirc they convince the one that
heshould go back with them instead of staying). When they return back
to the colony,it is decided that the inhabitants of the planet will be
left alone (despite thatwhat they are doing is technically illegal).
Also it is decided that severalEarth-like planets will be colonized,
so people wont have to make the same choicethat Rom's parents did
(they left Rom behind so she'd have the freedom to choosewhether or
not she wanted to live as an outlaw instead of forcing her to go
withthem when they disappeared to ilve on a forbidden world). I recall
that at thispoint the book ends with Rom noting that now she and her
friends are evengreater misfits, as they don't fit into the middle
group anymore but are stilltoo young to be part of the high group. If
this sets a spark in anyone's head, please reply or email me back.
Also, ifthis is the wrong place to post but you can point me out to
the correct placeto ask for help, I'd be grateful. TIA. |

If no one can remember the specific story, maybe this will
help:

You're actually the second person I've seen ask about this book in the
past month. It's _But We Are Not of Earth_ by Jean E. Karl.
