I hate to post this here because I don't to post an ad or anything, I am
lurker of this group and a big fan of children's literature. I am also a new
mom, and am starting a Yahoo group for moms and caretakers of children to
join, to have discussions about books with the purpose of encouraging
children to read.
If anyone is interested please go to Yahoo.com and go to groups, and search
for Moms Getting Kids to Read or gettingkidstoread is the group's email to
subscribe.
All children's lit topics are welcome, any kids authors, children's
magazines, picture books etc- anything geared toward the best and most
exciting books for kids to read, especially through junior high age.
I myself don't know much about the current kids books out today, I came up
in the 80's so I am interested in recs that are the latest and greatest. I
also love the classics- Velveteen Rabbit, Alfred Hitchcock and the Three
Investigators, more obscure books, Judy Blume, Paula Danziger, The Little
Prince, ...anything! If interested, please check it out- this is the only
group I am posting this to otherwise I hope people looking for Yahoo groups
find it. I don't know how else to attract members who would be interested.
My own personal favorite book from childhood was The Pink Motel, has anyone
read that?

Sorry for the post- I don't know why I didn't just add the link to the group
in my sig file. My apologies.
What are the most popular books out there right now, for kids in elementary
school to read? I have not kept up with Newbury winners since the 80's, and
every kid I know just loves Harry Potter to pieces. Kids still love Judy
Blume, Beverly Cleary, Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, etc. But who's new??? I
am headingto the local library next week to check out some of the later
Newbury winners. I feel out of the loop!

I have. I always enjoyed it. It wasn't what you'd necessarily consider a
great book, but it sticks in the mind, somehow, doesn't it? |

You might look further back than the 1980s, too -- or even Newbury.
Narnia from the 1940s, Edward Eager from the 40s or 50s, Arthur Ransome
from the 1930s, E. Nesbit from the 1900s....
And of course the official classics, like WIND IN THE WILLOWS, WINNIE
THE POOH.... I suspect if a child is introduced to those young enough,
he wouldn't boggle over the cultural difference....
