The Bay Area English Regency Society (BAERS)
is pleased to present both a Regency (English country dance and waltz) ball
and a workshop on authentic period figures and footwork on June 26,
and dance parties (June 11, July 9).
REGENCY FIGURES AND FOOTWORK WORKSHOP
with Susan de Guardiola
June 26, 2004 2:30 - 5:30 pm
Arlington Community Church
52 Arlington Avenue in Kensington (in the hills east of Berkeley)
Enjoy a workshop with East Coast vintage dance leader Susan de Guardiola (of
the Elegant Arts Society, < http://www.elegantarts.org > on authentic
Regency-period figures and footwork, which can be used to enhance your period
country dancing. The workshop will have live music by James Langdell.
Separate admission is $10, or combined Ball/workshop admission is $25.
Dress comfortably, with danceable shoes.
A flyer is online at < http://www.baers.org/susanworkshop.html >
Attending the workshop is not required to enjoy the ball, and it will not cover
the dances on the ball program, which are being reviewed at our dance parties
(like the one on Friday, June 11th, at St. Mark's in Palo Alto), but will in
any case be taught at the ball itself.
THE MASTERS AND COMMANDERS BALL
June 26, 2004 8:00 - 11:30 pm
Arlington Community Church
52 Arlington Avenue in Kensington (in the hills east of Berkeley)
$20 at the door, $15 in advance. $2 discount for BACDS and GBACG members.
To glory we steer!
Enjoy an evening of patriotic English country dances and flirtatious waltzes in
the spirit of the early 1800s, the time of Nelson, Cochrane (and, in fiction)
Hornblower, Aubrey, and Maturin. Celebrate the 199.7th anniversary of Nelson's
famous (if fatal) victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Alan Winston leads the dancing.
The Divertimento Dance Orchestra plays, under the direction of James Langdell.
Sing - or enjoy listening - to period naval songs like
"The Battle of the Nile" and "Hearts of Oak."
Civilians and visitors from the future are welcome. Period costume and
uniforms are admired but not required; festive dress is appropriate.
Contributions to the refreshment table are welcome.

Our balls are generally accessible even to very new dancers, but if you'd like
an advance look at some of the dances, or just want to do more English dancing
at a time BACDS doesn't offer any, come to one of our SECOND-FRIDAY
dance parties in Palo Alto.
The Bay Area English Regency Society sponsors informal (casual dress) dance
parties at St. Mark's Episcopal Church (600 Colorado Avenue, a block and a half
off Middlefield, in Palo Alto) on the second Friday of each month (except
January, August, and December).
Many BAERS dancers will find their way to St. Mark's for an English dance
with the Flying Romanos and Colin Hume this coming Sunday.
These dance parties are an opportunity to learn and dance the flirtatious
waltzes, spirited country dances, and vigorous cotillions of Jane Austen's day
(the late 1700s and early 1800s), in the graceful spirit of the English
Regency. They provide previews of the programs for each of our several annual
Balls, but are fun events in themselves.
Admission $5. All dances taught or prompted, usually by Alan Winston.
Newcomers welcome, no partners required - the custom in Austen's era was to
change partners frequently - live music. Casual dress. Doors open at 7:45;
dancing begins at 8:00 and continues (with a mid-evening break) until 10:30.
BAERS 2nd-Friday dance parties continue through July, then resume
September-November.
June 11 (Dances for the Masters and Commanders Ball)
July 9 (Special Early American dance party)
More info: < http://www.baers.org/fridays.html >
PS: Alan Winston also leads Regency dancing and English country dancing at the
San Francisco Free Folk Festival on Sunday, June 27. Check them out at
