Why I teach swimming at the YMCA

For over two years, the YMCA was after me to teach swimming. At first, I was
not sure it was something I wanted to do. I already hade three jobs, but
after the persistent recruiting of Scott Swanson, I finally gave in. Am I
glad I did! .
I get excited every time I teach at the Y. I feel like I am accomplishing a
great deal by teaching my students swimming and aquatic safety skill. I
strive to make my kids enjoy their lessons. My goal is to motivate and
educate my students and help them achieve the very best they can. I
consider it a privilege to mold non-swimmers into swimmers. When a young
child comes to me petrified of the water , I love to work with that child
and help him or her overcome that fear.
I strive to be a healthy role model for my kids and live the YMCA triangle
of healthy mind, body, and spirit. I remember one incident when a kid broke
down crying after everyone made fun of him because he could not throw a
ball across the pool. I gave that kid my full attention and projected the
confidence I had for him to help him realize he could do it. I told him the
only difference between those kids who could throw the ball and those who
could not was that he just had to try a little harder. On his next try, he
threw that ball across the pool and everyone clapped for him. We all felt
good that day, learned a little compassion, and were all winners!
I have been teaching now for over six years and love doing
it.
