Another question... hehe, I've got plenty of them.

The Red Ludwigia and Anacharis in my tank seems to be growing roots from
several places along the stem of the plants.

It is really strange because they are planted in the substrate of course,
but there are lots of long white strands that are coming from several areas
on the plants.

Anything that could possibly be causing this? It looks kind of strange and
when I bought the plants from the LFS, they didn't have any of these extra
roots.

Lots of plants do that - you just need to trim them back periodically.

My friend had a Cabomba plant that did that. He let the roots grow, and
when they became long enough, they pulled the plant down a little. It
was kind of neat to see. The plant ended up dying, but I think that was
from too little light and an algae problem.

Does it hurt the plants or deter growth at all if the roots are dangling
from the plant?

Most of these plants are pretty short; only about 8 inches long.

several places along the stem of the plants.

That's perfectly normal for many plants. Ludwigia especially does this. The
extra roots help with nutrient uptake. (You will find the same thing with
Lobelia Cardinalis, Egeria Densa, Rotala Macrandra, and a whole pile
of other plants, especially stem plants.)

Just as expected for that plant.

There is nothing wrong with the plant at all. At the LFS, they carefully trim
the plants and sell the top shoots without the roots because many people
think that the plant looks nicer without the roots. But the roots are a sign of
a healthy plant that is growing. If you don't like them, periodically take
cuttings from the top and replant those. You can leave the bottom parts
in place, and they will eventually grow new shoots. But, more commonly,
people pull up the bottom part and throw it away (at least after a few
prunings)
because the bottom part eventually won't grow new shoots very well.

Cheers,

Michi.

Because in a fish tank, there are probably as many nutrients floating
about in the water as there are in the substrate, and what roots are is
the uptake system for nutrients (as well as anchoring the plant).

I agree with Sophie, perhaps the roots are searching for PO4 which they
are'nt finding in the substarte but in the water column!

That's all okay, my water wisterias do! You may like cut them and stick the cut-offs into the subtrate again to make them grow.
Hope that's helped.
