Reading this article at
http://www.cricinfo.com/compaq/content/current/story/425066.html,
specifically the below bit, bought back old memories of a classic post
in this newsgroup.
"He had got starts in the previous two games, but India's decision to
send Dinesh Karthik to open meant Tendulkar was under pressure from ball
one. When Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid walked out today, there was a tinge
of the 1990s solidity. As it panned out, the innings that followed
harked back to the Tendulkar of yore. Dravid, for long India's most
technically sound batsman, allowed Tendulkar to play his game."
Dravid is such an understated cricketer, his 39 runs here were worth
much more, I would say it was pretty much worth all the 319 India scored.
As Fink Nottle noted a few years back, Dravid's presence allows other
mortals to play their game without fear. Sachin was afraid to play his
own game when asked to open with Karthik. Its a different matter that
when Sachin got out in both these games, Dravid was at the other end.
The effect of Karthik's dismissal got so much to Sachin that he stopped
playing his natural game despite Dravid's solid presence at the other end.
Fink's original post is here:

"97 runs with 6 wkts in hand was nowhere near a safe position. The way
Dravid saw off the strike bowlers was a pleasure to watch. He survived
and steadied the ship - giving Yuvraj the luxury of taking a few risks
as he moved the score along. "
Here also, 0/0 was nowhere a safe position. The way Dravid saw off SL's
terrorizing strike bowlers was a pleasure to watch. He survived and
steadied the ship - giving Sachin the luxury of taking a few risks as he
moved the score along.
Sachins come, Sachins go
Yuvrajs come, Yuvrajs go
