I recently came across the following article about problems observed
with several of the rifles used in an African hunter training course.
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=60181
I would be interested in any comments on this. I am somewhat surprised
that so many malfunctions would show up in a relatively short time.
What would be a reasonable means of testing a dangerous game rifle for
reliability, either a particular model of rifle (for example the new
Kimber 375 H&H which has most of the features of a dangerous game
rifle but which is too new to have an established track record) or a
particular rifle of a type generally accepted as suitable for
dangerous game (for example the CZ .375 magnum on the rack at my local
Scheels)?
Thank you,

Haeth's article is quite good as are his other writings. Look for
more at http://www.cybertorpedo.com/africanhunter/# As for your
potential DGR. Feed it spitzers and roundnose, solids and softs. If
you have a mind to use bullets with wide meplats test them a lot.
Loading single shots while seated at the bench tells you only about
that. Shoot from standing, post rest, and shooting sticks. Work the
action with the rifle at your shoulder as it is supposed to be. Fill
the magazine, if you can. Shoot with a full magazine, if you can.
Inspect your softs. Does the one in the bottom of the magazine get
its nose battered by the time it's called upon to feed smoothly? Does
your rifle feed battered softs smoothly? Does it feed one at all?
Work the action slowly and quietly. Does it feed? Work the action
with your best bolt flick. Does it work? Do your cartridges rattle
when the magazine is full? Does the floorplate stay latched closed
all the time? Can the safety be turned off quietly? Can you turn it
back on with one hand? In time you'll learn if the stock needs extra
crossbolts or if glassbedding needs to be done or redone. If you use
a scope you'll learn whether your rings grip your scope well enough
(Hint, the 2.5x Leupold is not only rugged, but it's light making less
likely to creep in its rings). Does the rifle feel like an extension
of your body? When you bring it to your shoulder are looking straight
down the sights or through the center of the scope tube? If you have
to fish around to find your sight picture the gun does not fit. This
is a nuisance when hunting deer and antelope but it could cost you
time you don't have when you're hunting critters that will hunt you
back. FWIW My PH thought his CZ was "strong like tractor, simple as a
crowbar, and reliable as sunrise. They're inexpensive and there seems
to be plenty of serious riflesmiths who know how to tune them for best
servicve. Good hunting!

Gee, y'all got funny friends. When I told one of my friends that I was
releasing the raccoons I've been trapping outside of town, he was
disgusted. "The only good raccoon is dead raccoon."

Thank you for your reply. Your test of leaving a soft point round in
the bottom of the magazine for several shots is one I had not thought
of. In this article, accessed via the link you provided, Haeth also
mentions operating the rifle in all possible orientations (upside
down, with the ejection port down, etc.):
