Not a firearm and I didn't personally find it but
still kinda on-topic;

Back when I was in Boy Scouts, our troop would spend a
week every summer on Mackinaw Island serving as guides
and running up the flag and such. One year (1980-81?)
one of my buddies found a Minie type bullet lying on
the ground at the foot of the hill below Fort Holmes
(the British built log fort constructed during the War
of 1812).

He took it too the historical authorities on the island
who informed us that the area below Fort Holmes was once
used as a firing range back when Fort Mackinaw was active
and the bullet had probably been washed out from the hill
side over time.

I can't remember what caliber it was but they did let my
buddy keep it.

(They'd probably force him to go thru psychiatric
counseling if he had found it nowadays....)

Back 25 or so years ago, I was debating whether or not to buy a metal
detector. I found out that there was a place in town that rented them,
so I decided I would rent one prior to making the final decision about
buying one.

I live in Denver Co, and this ocurred during the time when Chatfield
Reservoir was under construction. There were some fairly old houses
that were on the reservoir site, and these houses were being torn down
to make room for the reservoir. I got permission to go around those
old places on the weekend, with this rented metal detector.

The wife and I hadn't been there very long........digging up tin cans
and such.....when we got a good "buzz" from the detector. We dug down
a few inches and here was this revolver. It was in pretty bad shape,
all crusted with dirt, and rusty. But it appeared to be whole, and not
smashed or anything. Man, were we excited!

However......subsequent cleaning and inspecting revealed that our find
was a toy revolver. It was still kind of exciting, cuz the toy
revolver was real solid metal, and looked to be quite old. An antique
metal toy revolver. That was a good day we had, cuz later on, I was
looking under the wooden steps leading up to to the back door of one of
these houses, and there lay an Indian Head penny. It was laying on top
of another board that was just lying there.......and it had evidentally
been protected from weather, moisture, etc. It was in really nice
condition, tho investigation showed that it was a common date and mint
mark, not worth a whole lot.

But it sure was exciting!! And I _DID_ decide to buy a metal
detector! I bought a Whites Coinmaster IV.
