When I was in sixth grade, our English textbook contained a chapter from
"Dragonsong" -- the one where Menolly encounters the queen fire lizard at
the beach. This single excerpt totally sold me on the whole series, which I
checked out from the library and read avidly. They're absolutely
appropriate for upper grade school kids.

I will say that the Harper Hall series also led me to the Dragonriders
series, which is much darker and less appropriate for kids, but hey, I read
'em and I survived Wink
