I was quoted a price of $100 dollars by a kawasaki dealer for a shift
lever for a KZ440. Where can I go to do better than that? That's
ridiculous.
Thanks.

.... "aftermarket shop". meaning an independent
that carries aftermarket parts.
example: i broke the ball off the clutch lever
a couple of weeks ago:
dealer: $43.50us
afterm: $22.00us (same product, wrapped differently

Depending on how it is broken, you might be able to get a welder
to fix for about 1/10 the cost. Also, I don't know if an
aftermarket dirtbike shift lever might work, but would be much
cheaper. If you got a salvage dealer nearby, take the broken
part to him and see if he can match you up.

Chris et al.,
Thanks for all of the helpful replies. I just called a motorcycle
salvage place in Maine where I live and they have one for ten bucks.
This is of course better than 100 bucks, plus with an old bike I am
happy to make a connection with a repair place that also has a salvage
warehouse. This old kawasaki looks great and I am trying to keep it
running long enough to learn and not take too bad a beating while
trying to locate the best repair place.
I am going to pass it to my boy next year and maybe move up to a used
Shadow. One thing that I have discovered from just riding a few weeks
is that you can learn to hate the thought of winter coming, as if
there are not enough reasons already. Sometimes global warming sounds
like a good thing, even though that is not politically correct.
Thanks again.

Try http://www.ajcyclesalvage.com
They're near me and if you need my assistance with eyeballing it or
shipping, it's no trouble at all.
Also, if you want to send it to me, I do some welding as do a few guys I
know. Maybe we could fix 'er up for you? |

You can go to ebay, you can go to a junkyard, or you can give a welder $10
to make you one.

A local motorcycle salvage yard will sell you one for $30, probably.
Keep in mind that shift levers might be interchangeable between years
and even between models, so if they don't have a 440LDT shift lever, try
a different model from the same era; chances are it will work.
Nikita,
whose first bike was a 440LTD! |

That's easy. Just get Agent and agt-find; the stats are easy to generate.

My bike died on me two years ago, and was sold; and I never got another
one, because I did not want another 20-year-old wreck, and could not afford
a new(ish) one. So the urge to hang around here was less; also, I tried
(and largely succeeded) to kick my Usenet addiction. It was taking too
large a chunk out of my life.
I miss having a bike, however, and now that the bike of my dreams--the
VStrom 650--actually exists and is reasonably priced, I might just get back
into it.
Nikita.
PS: Anybody around here have a VStrom 650? |

Better men have tried...
and failed. :-)
