Whom do you think was more dominant day in day out? Sampras managed to
win more than him. But Becker was in a tough era and yet has more
years with better win%. He also managed to 55 titles battling against
the likes of McEnroe/Lendl/Wilander/Edberg and later Agassi/Sampras.
Sampras was lucky to have only Agassi as the main competition and that
too only in 1995. Agassi made a disappearing act from 1996-98.
Many people will Sampras is greater because he has the better
achievement, but if you go by who dominated the tour more, the choice
would be Becker. My win-loss analysis puts Becker over Sampras.
Becker dominant years (in terms of win-loss)
1986 (very good year)
1988 (even better year - though he failed at slams, he won YEC and had
even better win-loss)
1989 (best year)
1990 (slight decline, but still pretty good)
1991 (even bigger decline, but still good enough)
Sampras dominant years (in terms of win-loss)
1993 (good year but more like Becker's 1990)
1994 (best year but not as good as Becker's 1988 or 1989)
1995 (okay year worse than Becker's 1990)
1996 (good year but worse than 1994)
1997 (exact same as 1995)
1999 (slightly better than 1995 and 1997)
Becker best years 1986, 1988 and 1989 were better than Sampras best
year - 1994. Also Becker had to deal with Lendl in top form in 1986,
Wilander in top form in 1988 and Lendl/Edberg in top form in 1989. But
he still managed to get a better win-loss than Sampras during his best
year.
So this begs the question... was Quincy right? |
