375 H&H Magnum...

I used to read a lot of books on big game hunting in Africa. My firs
book on by Peter Capstick. That led to Theodore Roosevelt's great book on
his Africa safari. I fell in love with Pondoro Tailors books too. A rifle
that I have been wanting since I started reading those books was the classic
safari rifle - 375 H&H Magnum.

I would love to get the Ruger in 375 H&H magnum. I see it listed online
for around $1,200 or so. My question is - are there any sites online that I
can get a used one for a lot lower price? Considering this is a big
cartridge (as far as U.S. hunting is concerned), I figured I could get a not
much used Ruger for a low price.

So, what are my chances of finding a good Ruger in 375 H&H and a low price?

Thanks!

I see lots of them for sale at
http://www.gunbroker.com

It looks like the Remingtons and Mausers can be bought a bit cheaper
than the Rugers, BTW.

I think there are more of these rifles in closets and safes than there are
in Africa or Alaska. I frequent gun shops and the only place I have reliably
seen rifles like this is in a Bass Pro Shop's Fine Arms Room. I imagine you
might get the same results in a Cabelas.

Auction Arms has this one listed:
http://www.auctionarms.com/search/displayitem.cfm?itemnum=9423010&oh= There
is a Remington Ultra Mag for less:

If you go to Gallery of Guns you can get a CZ or a Weatherby for +/- $1200.

If price is an issue you might spend more time hunting for the rifle than
the animal.

Do you reload? Factory ammo in 375H&H is pretty spendy.

# I was hoping to get
# a Ruger 375 H&H for under $800.  Maybe I'm dreaming.

If you had checked the link I already gave you, you would have found
these for under $800

# Which Ruger, #1 or 77? I've seen #1s in the $600-700 range used.
# Never have seen a 77 in African mode around here.

I'm after the 77. I could have sworn I seen them on the Ruger site for
around $1,200 or so a few years ago. I checked last night and they are
listed around $2,300. Was I dreaming or where they $1,200 a few years ago?

While the No.1 is a fine and affordable rifle in 375 H&H the OP is
looking for a M77 MkII Safari Magnum which has an MSRP of $2300 and a
gunstore price of ~$1700. If you know of any selling for less than
$800 please <reply to author> immediately! Thanks.

You might consider the 375 Ruger cartridge instead of the 375 H&H - it
actually gives better performance, and the rifle costs a lot less. See
ballistics at

http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=627

The rifle goes for $1079 new - see
