Same old, same old. People cheat - period. Some cut the course, others
take drugs, some run under another name.
Some things will never stop. All the honesty checks go into making
sure those that earn money are legit short of testing for
hermaphrodites.

It would seem fairly easy to run a program against each runners 5k
times and look for big deviations. The mats at least insure each
chip crosses every 5k. If they hand off the chip to another runner
they will probably get away with it unless the second runner is some
serious factor faster.

I'm always amazed when people are amazed that people cheat in races.
Duh? Ever wonder how many people file less than honest income tax
returns, speed or drive while drunk?

I'm not surprised that we don't have even more people cheating. Our
economic conditions aren't in their current state because people were
being honest. We can't open a newspaper/magazine without being
inundated with either lies or disinformation on both sides. In some
countries a bribe is way of life. I hope we come out of this abyss
with some morality remaining.

The siren songs from the park were apparently too alluring for Wendy
Savinar and Cheryl Rosenberg, the two California women with suspicious
times in last yearıs race. There was no electronic timing record of them
from Miles 17 to 25. Discussing in a telephone interview whether she had
run the whole race, Ms. Savinar said, ³I technically hadnıt.² She said
that an ankle injury compelled her to cut to Central Park and that Ms.
Rosenberg went along.

That's essentially what happened with one woman in my age group at last
year's Nike Women's Marathon. I don't know whether she had an injury or
just tired out. The second point that the marathon and half marathon
courses diverged is just before the 16-mile point of the marathon course;
to finish the entire marathon, you turn left and do a lollipop loop back to
that point and then another tenth mile to the finish line. That same point
is at the 13-mile point of the half marathon course, and the half
marathoners turn right to run that last tenth of a mile. The timing sheets
indicate that she most likely turned right at that point.

She was one of three women in the age group who did not run the full
course; the other two, though, dropped out along the route and never
crossed the finish line.
