"Anotha Day Anotha Balla" - South Circle (95)
I liked the two Mr. Mike albums, so I always wanted
to check this out. The musical quality's undeniable.
My problem is that both rappers are technically so
prolific that I wish they'd have a better grip on
songwriting and just generally lyrics.
Thorough can be a beast ("Neva Take Me Alive")
and Mike has a spectacular presence, they both
take a creative approach, but the creativity is not
channeled. Most of those lyrics might as well be
freestyled.
Still, I can see why people would go back to this.
"Eastern Philosophy" - Apathy (06)
I consider Ap one of the best rappers I've heard
post the heroes of my teenage years. Up there with
Nas, Big Pun, Big L, Eminem. He just doesn't have
the catalog to back it up.
I guess the Eastern (as in East Coast) approach is
what prevented him from gaining wider appeal.
This guy can be incredibly clever, but the album
can only a couple of times evade the underground
East Coast formula.
I want to more than like it, I want to praise it,
but particularly musically it's the opposite of
groundbreaking. I'd speculate that it was delayed
for years, but some of the references are very
recent (considering the year of release).
Still, many competitive rappers would kill to be
this skilled and there's some classic punchline
shit on there.
