For all of you that say that "real" rock is dead, check out this album:
"Backspacer", by Pearl Jam. You've got to be dead from the neck up to
persist with the "rock is dead" thing after listening to this album.

I just got the album for my birthday. It's got a pretty big "wow"
factor. For one thing, it's back a bit to roots rock, some
punk-flavored stuff, some ballads, even a country-tinged tune ("Just
Breathe"), overall a really nice mix of tunes. Another thing: Vedder
has retreated a bit from the "sky is falling" lyrics, and the album puts
forward a much more upbeat and positive vibe than a lot of the band's
earlier efforts. (Vedder says he was inspired by Obama's election.)

I'm just giving this a first listen now (it's almost done), so I haven't
really let any of the tunes settle in yet to the degree that I can pick
out particular favorites (although "Supersonic", a great, straight-ahead
rocker with punk overtones, struck my fancy immediately).

Give it a listen, folks! Rock can't die unless we let it!

That may be rock, but nothing sited in this thread so far that I've
heard even come close to ANYTHING by The Beatles.

OK, had a second listen to a few songs that intrigued me. Aside from
the aforementioned "Supersonic", I thought "The Fixer" was really good
(no surprise, as it turns out that's the album's single), but (for now
at least) I thought the best cut was "Speed of Sound", an introspective
ballad. Beautiful lyrics.

Buy this album. Do it. Now. No excuses!

Thanks, Dave. That one's growing on me a bit at a time, too.

Glad you enjoyed it.

You've just described what I didn't like about them. It was obvious
from the first time someone threw on a CD back when that they were yet
another return of stadium rock repackaged in a grunge outfit. It was
the beginning of the end of what I loved before it had even really
gotten a chance to blossom if that makes sense - and I knew it. First
song, I was like "Oh shit. Start the countdown. It's over. Dammit."

I liked the more club/boutique stuff and while I wanted my favorites
to be successful, this was different. This was a slight bastardization
of what I considered the real thing after dressing it in the right
outfit - but close enough that no one who didn't love it as much as I
did then would even hear or discern. And I immediately knew with cold
certainty that they'd be successful - more successful than most bands
that I loved - and no one would know the difference, in fact, they
would prefer it.

In hindsight, I don't give a shit about any of that and there are
certainly many worse things than Pearl Jam in the scheme of things.
I'm glad you enjoyed the show, but they will always carry that tinge
of regret for me.

Ok, but let's talk about some less known bands who have
a couple of good songs. Ever heard of a band called
"The Smile"?

That "jeff" was a different "Jeff", right?

Well, there is a new Jeff here, and it isn't me.
He writes much better than me.

I don't know. Maybe if I heard a song it would refresh my memory.

Did you ever hear of the Jordan Brothers? 1950s - 60's band who
played in southeastern Pennsylvania near the Reading/Pottsville area
where I lived.

They did a marvelous rendition of the Spencer Davis hit, "Gimme Some
Lovin'". I actually thought it was their song until I found out
otherwise.
