Gran Canaria/Bahia Feliz in January?...

Hi,

Can anybody share opinions about this spot?
I've searched through the archive, but I can't believe it is really
that bad, otherwise why Club Mistral would be there?
I'll be on 1-week family holidays there and I'm wondering how many
windsurfing days I can realistically expect to squeeze in (just want
to sneak out for a quick 1-2hrs sesh sometime when my wife and 1-year
old son are busy with other stuff, if you know what I mean Wink). BTW
I'm not a wave sailor (yet Wink).

Thanks,

Hi Marek,

I was an instructor there for a year so know the place well. In the
winter the wind comes a bit more out of the East than it does in the
summer, which is a good thing for Bahia Feliz. It's creates a side-
shore wind with some shore-break, but nothing too serious. There are
no waves to worry about there once you get out, just really fun bump
and jump conditions. If the wind comes in, expect to be on sails
around 5.5 but the odds of wind are not a whole lot better than 60%.
With only a week there that could mean a week of nothing though. Gran
Canaria is a beautiful island though and there's plenty to do. Go
inland and see the mountains or check out Las Palmas.

There will be plenty of gear available in January so just walk up when
you see the wind in the palm trees. It's a nice resort with a good
size pool area so a good choice since you're bringing a 1-year old.

Tell Klaus Tony says hi.

Thanks for your post.
Is there any other flat-water spot nearby where odds of getting some
wind are better,
or if there is no wind in Bahia Feliz I can forget about windsurfing?
I was hoping with 7.5 sails they say they have I should be able to get
on plane more often (my weight 90kg).
How about body-boarding in Bahia Feliz, do waves appear always with
the wind?
How about beginner surfing at some other spot?

Hi Marek,

That time of year, when there is no wind at Bahia Feliz, there won't
be wind anywhere. In the Spring and Summer, when the wind comes almost
straight out of the North, it's common that Bahia Feliz will have no
wind and it's blowing 40 knots 30 minutes away at Pozo (waves as you
might know) and the flat water at Arinaga. Check out this Youtube
video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju12DyOSvfk) that show the
conditions there. On this day the wind seems to have come straight
North, almost off-shore where it usually comes just a bit more side.
As you sail further out, you'll start running in to some of the most
fun swell riding anywhere.
Club Mistral will organize trips here when there's no wind in Bahia
Feliz. Don't count on sailing here in January though. Then again, you
never know. It's an all day excursion though so not that compatible
with daddy duty.

The shore break at Bahia Feliz is not that strong so body boarding is
possible, but not super exciting on most days. Typically waves are
wind generated so when it's worth body-boarding you'll want to be
sailing. You could get days for 7.5 but I didn't see that many when I
was there.

Thanks for the super-detailed info, that's what I wanted to know
(although not necessarily what I wanted to hear Wink).
I'll prebook a board for 5 days anyway, just to have an excuse to at
least go wobbling every day for an hour or so.

I'm wondering, in the summer, is Arinaga the only flat-water location
on Gran Canaria? BTW do they have some rescue service since it is off-
shore?
If I like it I may want to go there in the summer, what would be your
recommendation for yet another family trip, stay
at Bahia Feliz wind protected area good for children and drive for
windsurfing somewhere else every day or is there a good place that
combines both? (can't take my wife and son - yet Smile - to a beach
where it blows 40 kts Wink) Maybe a different canarian island?

When I was there Club Mistral would not let you take gear and go sail
at Arinaga. You'd only be able to sail there if they organized a trip
there. There is no other flat water spot on Gran Canaria, unless they
discovered one after I left there.
There was no rescue service when I was there. Like I mentioned before,
it's not usually as off-shore as that video footage might lead you to
believe. If something goes really wrong, you drift along the coast and
worst case scenario is that you end up washing ashore in Pozo.

For a future vacation I'd suggest checking out Renee Egli on Fuerte
Ventura. Same strong winds, directly off-shore with lots of available
gear (probably the largest windsurf center in the world) and
continuous rescue service.

Have fun over there. It's great sailing when the wind blows so I hope
it does for you.

Wow, looks like a windsurfer's paradise.
But the island looks like a desert at least at the area presented on
the video, guess not too much fun there if you are not *surfing (I see
on the video that even inside the hotel area it can get quite windy).
Well, you rarely can have everything.
Has anybody been on Fuerte with their little ones?
