I spent part of this afternoon at the East Valley high-school cross country
regional meet. There are some amazing kids there. I cheered all the
runners, and I got to speak with some of the runners, officials, and some
of the parents.
The state championship will be on November 7; unfortunately, I won't be
able to make it there. While I was speaking with one of the officials, he
said that at the state championship, runners will be wearing timing chips
on both feet. It seems that at a recent championship, there was a dead
heat between two runners, and because they were wearing chips on only one
foot, the person who crossed the finish line first wound up coming in
second according to the chip. What happened is that Mary's right foot
(without a chip) crossed the finish line first, then Joan's left foot (with
a chip), then Mary's left foot (with a chip), and then Joan's right foot
(without a chip). So Joan's chip crossed the line before Mary's chip did
even though Mary's other foot crossed the line before either of Joan's feet.
So, to ensure that this problem doesn't happen again, all runners will have
chips on both feet.
(Oh, BTW, I made up the names; I have no idea what the girls' names
actually are.)
