I haven't quite finished listening to the while thing .... it's a
little bit like too much coffee in the morning....but two
contributions stand out. First, Bjorling's 1959 live Vittoria, not
because it's the longest or the loudest, but because he actually
pronounced the word clearly!!!!! He just isn't hurling out a sound.
Second Birgit from Moscow. The caption says that in the C she blankets
the tenor....the point is that you can hear that she blankets the
entire orchestra. I actually heard this live with her a few
times....she is the one singer I ever heard who could actually cover
an entire orchestra, and I don't think that almost ever comes across
on a recording.

The truth with the Turandot excerpt is that she really doesn't blanket
the tenor, because he stops singing. Prevedi does not even attempt the
high C, His voice stopped dead at Bb, and that was touch and go. If
you listen carefully you will hear him only come in after the C is
fisnished.
I saw he and Nilsson sing Turandot at Lewisohn Stadium with the Met in
about 1965. He did exactly the same thing, and he really blew the B at
the end of Nessun dorma. Prevedi, that is.

Well, I understand that, but the orchestra was still playing (even if
not at a high volume at that moment),and she rides over everything.
She was actually one of the great miracles of singing imho. If you
took someone like Gwyneth, who was extremely loud and in a way had a
'bigger' voice, against an orchestra it was she would could sometimes
disappear, because the sound was huge but never really 'pointed', and
ultimatley that is usually what counts.
The Tebaldi C is a tad flat, but so what....it is almost frighteningly
big.

Oh, I certainly agree with you re Nilsson, and Jones, for that matter.
I saw Nilsson much more often than I saw Jones, as Nilsson did so many
Italian opera perforamances. There were all the many Turandots, of
course, and Ballo, Aida, Macbeth, Tosca, all of which she sang a good
number of times, and especially Tosca.
Jones sang the biggest high C I have ever heard from any singer. In
1991, I went to see Fanciulla in LA, with Jones, Domingo, Diaz. The C
at the end of "Laggiu, nel Soledad" was the kind of huge, great high
note that makes one actually grin! It was simply unbelievable, and I
will never forget it. I thought it might cause an earthquake!

recently for ragging on Domingo so much, I want to congratulate you
for going all the way across country to hear him in Fanciulla.

thought it rather strange when they sang "Addio mia California" at the
