Jennifer Youngman will bring her bright, cheerful, easy to follow, and
innovative teaching and calling. Her dance repertoire and choices for
the evening's program encourage a sweet and gentle interaction between
dancers, and a feeling of community - attitudes that mean as much to
us as the actual patterns and moves on the dance floor. Jennifer's
reputation has spread throughout Puget Sound and the region; we're
pleased to have her back again.

Music will be by Small Pleasures, namely Vivian Williams on fiddle,
Phil Williams on guitar, Phil Katz on melodeons, and guests.
We bring together the traditional music of the Northwest, with the
New England (and related) traditions of contra dance playing. For
the occasion of a Fifth Saturday Dance, and for the tunes we play
(see below) we assemble a larger band, adding Bellingham's Paul
Englesberg on flute and, if pass conditions permit, Yakima's
Lynnel Rowan on bodhran and other percussion.

Vivian Williams has been the recipient of several dance mss tunebooks
from the pioneer era in the Northwest, which she has been republishing.
This month, a CD of those tunes, using the musicians of the Oct 31 band,
is being sent for production.

You'll be able to dance to these tunes on October 31, including about a
dozen brought to light over the past 18 months. I think you will find it
remarkable, how well they mix and medley with our existing repertoire.

The stories of these manuscripts are so remarkable; you couldn't
make 'em up!

Peter Beemer's dance band manuscript tunebook, came from an Idaho
gold-mining town in the 1860's, where the miners wanted a "respectable"
social event in their town, to distinguish themselves from adjining
towns where the only social life was saloons and bawdy-houses. Beemer's band
was of New England, English, and Pennsylvania origins, and was similar
to northern traditional-music bands of our present times. In particular,
in addition to the stringed instruments one expects, Peter Beemer was a
flute player, and the Englishman was a melodeon (button accordion) player.
Later, Vivian and Phil came upon the Haynes family fiddle manuscript
displayed in the window of Marilyn's Music in Baker City, Oregon.

The tunes themselves, re-published along with Vivian's researches of
the people involved and the tune histories, constitute one of the
most significant manuscripts ever discovered of music folks actually
danced to, in the pioneer Northwest.

The Beemer tunebook (republished w/ the music computer type-set) will be
on sale at the dance. The Haynes manuscript will soon be available.

We start at 7:30 p.m. with a workshop for newcomers. Bring your friends
you've been wanting to introduce to contra dancing. We're proud of
the tradition of asking newcomers and visitors to dance, and looking
after them on the dance floor. The dance runs 8-11pm

The dance is at Christ Church Wells Hall, 310 North K Street, Tacoma WA.
Driving directions are at http://seattledance.org/contra/fifth.sat.html

The dance is alcohol-free, smoke-free, and fragrance-free. Admission
is $8. As always, a 10% discount will be available to Seattle
Folklore Society members who request it.

A word about children's attendance: It is fine for older children and
teenagers who are comfortable interacting with adults on their own.
However, it is not appropriate for small children unless they are on the
sidelines supervised by adults at all times.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday. If you need more
information, please contact Phil Katz at philkatz at (no spam) ZZZhalcyon.com

A caution on parking: North K Street across from the hall has
been posted as a "permit only" zone, so please don't park there --
tickets have been given. Plenty of parking is available in the lot next
to the hall, on adjacent streets, and in the alley behind the church.
