So, it poured buckets today and our new building (leased) sprung some
serious leaks. Good thing it wasn't over the 600V.
After a colleague stuck a few buckets under the leaks, I remembered that
there was a mop and bucket in the back storage room and thought it would
be safer if we mopped up the wet tile floor. Yup, it would have been
had I made it across the wet floor. Splat, fall broken by left hand and
right knee. The knee is now the size of a grapefruit but doesn't hurt
at all except from the swelling and the abrasion. While the left hand
is painless at rest, it aches when I try to use it. Particularly bad is
when I carry a bag, like my laptop bag. It's not the wrist, but the
part of the palm at the base of my thumb. I am thinking that if it is
not better in the morning, I should probably have it x-rayed.
Sheesh. Last week I slammed my thumb in the door of my husband's car
and split open the thumb and sprayed blood all over the car and at work
at the badge reader outside the building. They had to get the cleaning
service to come and clean up because they're certified in bio-hazard
clean up. I didn't even know I was bleeding until I raised my badge up
to swipe through the reader. Who knew a thumb could bleed so much?

PS and to top it off, I think the eldest is coming down with the flu.
Not sure if H1N1 or seasonal, they're just saying we have an outbreak of
ILI (Influenza Like Illness). |

Take yourself to the Dr. If your kid is coming down with the flu you
need to be at least partially capable of doing nursing duty. A good
pot of chicken soup would be in order right now. If I was a bit closer
I would deliver it in the morning.
Hope you and yours are well soon.

But in the interim you should be staying off your knee and not using
your hand to tote around the lap top, ice both for 10-15 minutes every
hour or so (allow the body parts to warm up in between treatments
before you ice again) and elevate them. Good luck and I hope you
don't need the x-rays.

Sounds like the joint that makes the thumb opposable - often called a
saddle joint, which makes it on-topic. Maybe a minor sprain, or
hopefully just bruised.
The amount of swelling in that knee would have me concerned - hope it
comes right back down.
Nancy
And the verdicts are in, the hand is fine with just a bad bruise to the
bone but the knee, the part that wasn't really bothering me much, has
damage to the bursa under the kneecap.(snip)
The official diagnosis is bursitis along with tendonitis (snip)
Thanks everyone for the concern and advice.
Yikes! I hope your knee heals well. Ouch.

Netted me a day and a half off of work (which is why I'm posting in the
middle of the afternoon) with my leg up and knee in a compression bandage.
The swelling and attendant heat concerned the doctor as well even though
I had no joint pain from standing or bending the knee. I didn't
realize just how tender the knee was until he started poking around.
Ouch. The idea of the compression bandage is to try and persuade the
fluid out from under the knee cap so it can drain into my leg and the be
resorbed. If it doesn't drain, I will have to have an orthopede insert
a needle to remove the fluid. Double ouch. Followup tomorrow noon.
The official diagnosis is bursitis along with tendonitis (the tendon
that goes ov
Ibuprofen for the inflammation (now that any bleeding has stopped) and
ice complete the treatment for now.
So you guys were all right on the money. Una, I don't think I have any
ACL damage because I don't have any pain, instability, or weakness in
the knee apart from the external tenderness but I will ask about it
tomorrow. Laurel, ouch on the MRI wait but you were right on with the
recommended treatment.
Thanks everyone for the concern and advice.

Oh, I don't know, having a large bore needle stuck into a knee to suck the
fluid out gets pretty routine after a while Not pleasant but not awful.
SynVisc now, those 3 injections were awful. Worked a treat but mighty
unpleasant.

Forgot to mention an MRI incident. A couple of years back, some of
you may remember my gelding Boomer fell and wound up on top of his
rider who is a friend. She wound up on a ventilator etc. and did
recover fine in the end. But when I visited on day two in the
hospital, she was confused. When the doctor came into the room, I
mentioned the confusion and asked about an MRI. He yelled full voice,
"Where do you think you are? In the United States? We don't do MRI's
because someone asks." I did point out the confusion again, and in
the end he did the MRI but holy smokes talk about rationing out
diagnostic procedures. We have an overall excellent health system in
the sense no one will lose their home because they wound up in
hospital, but it ain't like the States in the availability of
diagnostic equipment.
Laurel
They might not lose thier home but could very well lose thier life.
There are probably instances of that, but overall things run smoothly.
But I think we battle some union issues over things like MRI
availability i.e. they aren't used around the clock due to old
contract issues with technicians. But as a former American, now
Canadian, I think we are blessed with a good system--not great but
good.

Obama has a plan for that.
Yes, I have been reading about it and trying to sort out the
complexities of how it would work, but I admit to being unclear about
how it fits in with all the big private insurers. I would love an
explanation without bias<g>.

Other than the big needle coming at you potentially, it doesn't sound
too bad. How was it diagnosed ie. did you get an MRI? We can get
same day x-rays, but they don't do too well with soft tissue injuries.
Take care.

The nature of the fall suggests the current diagnosis. Ya never know
