Wild turkey keeps Niagara cops hopping

The feathered terror of Lakeshore Road was back at it again Thursday
morning, stopping traffic and bringing out the Niagara Regional
Police.

Known as Angry Gobbler to the cops, the turkey was once again removed
from the road by the Lincoln County Humane Society at about 10 a. m.

We've responded to dozens of calls because of this turkey," said
humane society inspector Ted

Menard. We went out today to get it out of traffic."

However, getting the foul-tempered bird out of the path of cars is
about as much as Menard can do. The turkey is there to stay.

For the most part the turkey can terrorize residents and pets, attack
cars and buses, and even--as was the case over Thanksgiving weekend--
peck away with complete immunity at a turkey crossing sign posted by
homeowners.

Menard said Ministry of Natural Resources regulations prohibit the
humane society, or anyone else, from trapping or removing the bird
from the area.

It's a species native to the area, so MNR regulations say the farthest
we can move the bird is one kilometre from where it is found," he
said.

The only circumstance that would allow the humane society to actually
take the bird away would be if the turkey is injured or in distress,
he said.
