wellll (scandalous whisper) the original route was supposed to follow

the French Broad River and avoid the Gorge totally...

but some political backscratching caused the engineers to be over
ruled and viola the "scenic route" is created :> with all the rain I
really am not going to be surprised if the slides continue thru the
winter

That was not exactly the best route planning a road team has ever done. It
was closed the day before I was due at orientation at UT-Knoxville a, uh,
large number of years ago. 441 in the dead of night with all the Interstate
traffic re-routed onto it in the pouring rain was just a very memorable
trip! I lived in Waynesville, NC at the time.

I had the distinct pleasure of being in the NC mountains not 10 miles
from the TN border this summer sampling the Chataloochee. I saw the
French Broad River and sampled several other rivers.

I would NOT want to drive to the sampling spot on the Chataloochee with
any significant rain... steep (like almost sheer) slopes with no guard
rails where only one car would reasonably pass at certain spots. Off
the hook.

Today my husband was watching a show about the history of the TVA which
was very interesting. That huge dam they built was supposed to provide
electricity to ALCOA for the war effort but in fact some went to he
secret Oak Ridge ops.

They had to move ~2500 people out of the impounded area and it was sad
because most of these people had never lived anywhere else. I wonder
where they went.
