I just have one CD – It has Il Distrato (60) on it. I like it a lot
and I want to hear more.
But I really don’t want to get the lot at once – if I do that, I’ll
just get drowned in too much Haydn.
Can you post about which of his Haydn symphonies you think are
special? That way I can cherry pick! |

mandryka set the following eddies spiralling through the space-time
continuum:

My own personal favourites are 95, 98 and 99, along with the Sinfonia
Concertante.
95 - the only one of the "London" symphonies which (a) is in a minor key and
(b) lacks a slow introduction. A deeper, more heartfelt piece than the
rest.
98 - the slow movement is based in a fragment of the British national
anthem, Some commentators suggest that it is Haydn's lament for the
recently departed Mozart.
99 - the moment of chaos towards the end of the slow movement anticipates
the one in "Tabor" from Smetana's "Ma Vlast". Haydn was there a century
earlier.
