Any ship if the shields are down ;)
The ship is obviously designed to fuel up on suns (good guess me, yay).
So the shields are tuned to that specific environment, the ability to
withstand solar energies.
Maybe it's got an achilles heel, in the same way the replicators could
become immune to almost all energy weapons once they had a taste of them,
but good old fashioned earth bullets would take them out.

BTW, where did the Ancients go? Did they all become higher

Maybe it's like the Rapture concept.
According to Rush's understanding of what he read on the computer,
Destiny was never manned. The plan was for the ship to go off on its own
and the Alterans (as they were called) would gate in once it reached a
networked galaxy. They ascended first, it would seem.
Then why did the Destiny have an
environmental system running? Wouldn't
it have made more sense to leave it off
until needed?
I imagine that the environmental systems were programed to come on the
moment the ship's AI detected the presence of humanoid lifeforms, just
like the systems on Atlantis turned on when the Atlantis Expedition
(TM) arrived). |

Fair point, but if the ship was never manned, where did the CO2 come
from?
If Destiny was never manned, the air
should have been fine, whether the scrubbers ever worked or not. And a
ship that size should have had air for 80 people for weeks without
recirculating.
They're restricted to a small part of the ship, aren't they? I thought
most of the ship was still sealed off.
They seemed to be wandering all over looking for leaks.
We don't know enough about the ship or what has happened to it (or in
it) prior to the Icarus survivors arriving. Perhaps there are mechanisms
in the ship that produce C02 as a side effect, or consume/react to
oxygen, perhaps the ship was used to reach/explore/populate Pegasus but
has been empty for 99% of its operation time. It was designed with the
assumption that whoever gated in would know how things works, perhaps
bringing supplies for the ship with them as well.
Or maybe the writers are morons? I still want to know why they didn't
just leave the gate open to the desert planet and fill the ship with
fresh air. I really think the writers thin the air on Destiny would get
used up in a few hours without countermeasures.
Keeping the gate open would use up precious power. |

If air did pass through the gate (see below) they wouldn't have to
do anything except open the gate from the planet side, because
their air pressure was low. They could facilitate the process by
opening a door to space at the far end of the ship and letting the
fresh air flow through. But:
No. Air doesn't pass thru the gates. That got established
during SG1.
Really? Water does, doesn't it?
No. They connected with a gate underwater and sent a submersible
through, but no water came through.
Hey - wait a minute. Remember the episode where they first opened
the gate decades earlier and sent the guy through in the deep sea
diver's suit? Air hose and all? Air sure passes through the gate
THAT way.
The truly excellent 'Torment of Tantalus' season 1 SG-1
That air was in a tube and it was being pumped to the guy through
the wormhole. What you first proposed sounded more like just
leaving the gate open and it'll take care of itself.
They never established that air passed through the hose. It almost
certainly didn't since it was later established that things going
through the gate dematerialize and rematerialize on the other end.
In fact the scientist who went through probably didn't 'send' until
the gate suddenly shut off.
It's also true that the Earth gate was jury-rigged and abnormal in
some operations, lacking some safety protocols that natural original
gates have.
There are 15 seasons of Stargate already behind this. There are
contradictions and mistakes I'm sure, and the writers can make up
new rules all the time. Like the lack of a DHD in Universe. But so
far there is no evidence that air or water travels through the
wormhole without being containerized in some way.
There was some techno-babble throwaway line in one of the SG1
episodes about how the gates must have some kind of "intent"
detector. (Hey, I did say techno-babble!) Water will go thru
(syndication just aired a season 5 SGA episode where that was an
issue, the team dialed back to Atlantis via a submerged gate and told
them to leave the shield up to avoid flooding the base) but they can
go from an air environment to a water environment because the gates
are one-way. (And no, I have no idea how they recovered the sub from
that episode. Lots of mops afterwards I expect.)
Okay, thanks, that's what I recalled, and what I'd expect water to
do. I'd also expect air to act like water. I mean, is air the ONLY
thing the gate won't pass?
Apparently. There's no rush of air thru the gates into vacuum when the
Atlantis gate dials one of the space gates in Pegasus.
If air passed through the gate, the gate room would always be at risk
when they dialed up to a planet with a poisonous atmosphere. They
wouldn't need a MALP to check if the planet was safe - they'd just
stick a canary next to the gate.
Thus outraging animal rights groups! |

Okay - here's another. Occasionally (read almost all of the time)
one
sg
team
will dial a distant stargate and proceed through when the wormhole
opens.
If the stargate will stay open for 38 minutes, what is it that
causes
the
stargate to close almost right after all four members are through?
Remember - there's nobody back on the source planet to punch the
center. Even if that's been shown to work.
That's always been a problem. If they're being shot at and coming
home,
it might be SGC shutting it down on their end, but this *always*
happens.
Back to that magical "intent reader" technobabble. Its the Ancients'

If there's an intent reader to shut down a stargate, why not have an

A stargate's "phone number" consists of 7 pictograms called "chevrons". Six are

Earth's POO is a pyamid with a sun above it.
So...

I think there are over 30 different types of chevrons, so they can't be translated

Actually, like in "There but for the Grace of God", number /can/ be assigned

think the POO was in the case of said episode.)

stargate to close almost right after all four members are
through?
Remember - there's nobody back on the source planet to punch
the
center. Even if that's been shown to work.
That's always been a problem. If they're being shot at and
coming
home,
it might be SGC shutting it down on their end, but this *always*
happens.
Back to that magical "intent reader" technobabble. Its the
Ancients'
version of the motion detector in front of automatic doors.
If there's an intent reader to shut down a stargate, why not have an
intent
reader
to open a stargate?
What makes you think there isn't one?
I've never seen Stargate open up at the approach of a customer without
him
or her
dialing it.
What's its phone number?
A stargate's "phone number" consists of 7 pictograms called "chevrons".
Six are
the coordinates of the destination, and the 7th is the POO (point of
origin).
Earth's POO is a pyamid with a sun above it.
An 8th chevron leads you to another galaxy.
A 9th chevron was recently discovered. It leads to the starship Destiny.
A lot of things have POO as their origin - mainly insects! |

Stargates must be mind-readers. :)
They're like the elevators in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. They

That's it! Someone should check them for a Sirius Cybernetics
Corporation logo. :)
No point. Even if found, all you'd get is "Go stick your head in a pig"
if
you phoned them to complain about a malfunction.
Can't you just put lipstick on a pig a la Barack Obama?
Whatever turns ewe on! |
