With all the recent discussion lately regarding the 12gauge for home
defense, and a lot of recommendations for the use of #00 buck, I would
like to ask: what would you consider the 20 gauge equivilent shell?
I have a Winchester Model 12, modified choke, 2 3/4 chamber.

#3 buckshot seems to be the most prevalent, and from what I've heard/
read, sufficiently effective.

Being a proponent of slugs, not buckshot (which is great for mob control),
I'd still recommend slugs for the 20. Added benefit is reduced recoil as
opposed to the 12.

I checked at Midwayusa, and while they carry 3 brands, the only size
of 20ga buckshot they list is #3 buckshot. At Natchez, they also show
some #2 buckshot loads. A 20ga #3 buckshot cartridge only contains
about 20 pellets. A #00 buckshot 20ga cartridge would probably only
hold a few pellets.

You can't get an equivalent 00 buckshot load in 2 3/4", the number of
pellets WILL be fewer. 3" chamber, maybe. For inside use, though, #4
buckshot would probably be better. Not sure if anyone makes that, but
they're easy enough to load yourself. Ballistic Products will have
what you need. 20 gauge is kind of hard to find factory specialty
loads for on the shelf, other than duck and upland loads. A more open
choke is suggested, but I wouldn't whack a model 12 these days just to
get a open choke, particularly one in 20. A solution to that is a
cheap Mossberg 500 series in 20, this time of year they're running
sales.
A few places to check for factory 20 "tactical" loads would be Natchez
Shooters Supply, Ballistic Products, Precision Reloading and maybe
Midway.

There is no equivalent per se. The 20 ga will always strike a lighter
blow because its payload is smaller & lighter. That said, a 20 bore's
standard load of 20 pellets of #3 buckshot may well strike a serious
enough blow and there is much to be said for a gun you and the Mrs are
not afraid of practicing with. Massad Ayoob offers a concise analysis
of the 20 bore's merits here http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_5_46/ai_60897642/

My thanks to all of you who responded to the above question. Sounds
like #2 - #4 is the ballpark I'm looking at, with perhaps the #3 buck
shells being most prevalent for my chamber. I will check ammo stocks in
stores next time the opportunity presents itself.

If you find a selection, get out the cardboard and pattern a few
different makes. Just because a barrel has a bead doesn't mean it's
going to hit where it points.
