Mocha's been on the muscle of late, and Monday I noticed a couple of
bug bites on her poll that explained why she was so anxious and rushy
in the curb. Switched back to the snaffle today, completely light and
relaxed horse. Still strong and on the muscle, but the tension and
anxiety were mostly gone.
But! Grooming at the end, I went to brush between her jaws, like I
always do, and found a crusty mess. Investigating further, there were
a bunch of bites like the one on her poll (and slightly lower down on
her neck. I hadn't felt them there on Monday, but they were at the
same stage as the bites on her poll, so perhaps they hadn't been very
big at the time. Poor girl.
I pulled out the Corona cream and started applying it. Those bites
were itchy, itchy, itchy, and I could see her relax even further as I
rubbed the ointment in.
Barring anything else, I'm thinking bug bites. No fever, she's been
eating just fine, coat looks good, and she's got plenty of energy. But
still--poor girl, that had to be uncomfortable.
We had a nice, relaxing session before I discovered the bites under
her jaw. I'm surprised--I would have thought there'd be more tension,
as itchy as those bites were. As it was, the tension she was under
before I discovered the bites, the couple of days before, was
contributing to a lot of rushing. I was thinking that my seat was
off. But no such thing in the English saddle. Tension in her throws
me off my seat, I've decided.

Between the jaw and crusty mess around here always = tick bite. Any
Lyme disease in your area?

Dolly has had several outbreaks of the itchy hives and weeping sores.
Sometimes I find a tick, sometimes I don't. I scrubbed her down with
betadine and they cleared up almost instantly.

Tico had one on the point of his right shoulder today. I'd treated the
one on his neck/poll with a betadine scrub last week and that was well
on its way to healing. This new one had been on him for enough time to
cause some edema as well as the crusties. He was really itchy where the
tick had been: I first scrubbed it with alcohol until he stopped making
the "ooh Oooh right there!" giraffe faces, then I hit it with a good
betadine scrub as well.
Dusty, who's always been the tick magnet of the two of them, has been
(so far) tick free this fall.
I really hate ticks.
