Borrowed Time...

May I say it was a gorgeous Indian Summer afternoon? Too bad I didn't
have time to enjoy it. Instead I borrowed a day from what proposes to
be an early and cold winter and went out and had fun anyway. I rode
to Michigan -- the Upper Peninsula -- da U.P. I crossed the Menominee
River between Marquette, WI, and Menominee, MI, to say I had done it,
turned around in the Visitors' Center parking lot, and headed home by
way of Gillett, WI.

o Menominee is Algonquin for "wild-rice people." The Menominee River
forms part of the state boundary between upper Michigan and
Wisconsin. It gives its name to the iron range where Iron Mountain,
MI, is located and to the city and county in the Upper Peninsula. The
river is not anywhere near and ought not to be confused with the
Menominee Indian Reservation on the Wolf River in Menominee County,
WI, the city of Menomonee Falls on the Menomonee River in Waukesha
County, WI, or the city of Menomonie on Lake Menomin on the Red Cedar
River in Dunn County, WI.

I left at 10:30 at 52° and returned at 19:00 at 56°, having covered
307 mi.

Near Gillett, WI, (pronounced, I believe, JILL-it) I purchased three
pounds of crab apples for jelly and three pounds of a variety perhaps
more familiar to the Older Gentleman than to anyone on this side of
the pond, to wit: Cox's Orange Pippins.

"Regarded by the British as the finest flavored dessert apple. Medium
size, conical fruit with rather dull finish; red stripes over thin,
tough, smooth orange skin. Firm, tender, juicy, aromatic, yellow
flesh. Distinctive flavor; mellow aftertaste and unsurpassed
aroma. Tree produces many branches with required thinning; early
bearer. Blooms late, missing most frosts. Scab susceptible. Requires
600-800 hours of chilling. Hardy in Zones 4-8. Used as a parent in
many breeding programs. Seedling of Ribston Pippin from England in
1830."

On the way, I had lunch at Crivello's in Oconto, which is a stop on
the ABATE of Wisconsin Annual Statewide Poker Run.

The 1/2 pound Philly Burger special was topped with Swiss cheese,
shrooms, onions, and green peppers and -- along with fries, cole slaw,
and coffee -- cost me just over seven dollars. I rode out to the end
of the Oconto River breakwater to digest it:

From there I could see, given the clear air and favorable inversion,
the uplands of the Niagara Escarpment on the other side of Green Bay.

Nutrient applicators were out in force. I counted four, so the story
I posted a couple of days ago about the dairy economy collapsing and
by implication the price of hamburger and pet food crashing is
demonstrably bogus. Arriving in Sheboygan at dusk, I passed the brand
spanking new Texas Roadhouse, which employs (it is said) well over
300, and was pleased to notice their packing lot was parked.

My phone began buzzing in my shirt pocket and continued for several
blocks. After pulling into my own driveway, I was pleased to retrieve
a message from my boss asking me to fill in for an erstwhile
cow-orker. That gives me an extra 16 hours, which doubles my
allotment for the week. Woo hoo! Making jelly will have to wait.
