For Sale:
London, Jack. THE CALL OF THE WILD. Toronto, Macmillan of Canada, 1910.
Second Canadian edition, from the sheets of the 20th U.S. printing.
Illustrated by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. Decorated by
Chas. Edw. Hooper. Olive cloth, decorated and printed in black on cover and
spine. The spine title and author are in gilt. The spine imprint is
Macmillan /Toronto. 321 pp., plus (2) pp. of ads with the Macmillan of
Canada imprint. Moderate wear. Mild spine lean. The lower 1.5" of the
spine is darkened, caused by a piece out of the dust jacket. Very good.
The dust jacket, with the 1.5" piece out of the foot of the spine (removing
the publisher's imprint), appears to be identical with the U.S. first
edition jacket. It was/is not unusual for Canadian editions from U.S.
plates to carry U.S. dust jackets and there is no way of telling whether
this was the case here. However, the jacket has been with the book a long,
long time, given the darkened spine as evidience. So, whether this is a
Canadian dust jacket or an American one, it is early.
The dust jacket is grey, decorated and printed in green on cover and spine.
Condition would be very good but for the missing piece at the foot os the
spine
panel, rendering it good only.
