Just read in the paper that the first 15 days of October were the
coldest on record but, it did not slow down the birds--Robins, Harris's
sparrows and Juncos and White-throated sparrows in great abundance

I find cold weather increases bird activity. They need the extra
nourishment to handle the conditions.

First Junco yesterday. First White-throated Sparrow today, also a
migrant Ruby-throated Hummingbird. The trees behind us were full of
Robins all day. Cardinals seem to be relaxing their territorial defenses.

Trees are about 30% turned. The color this fall is excellent, due to our
wet, moderate summer.

Lanny, still no Junco sightings here at the farm.

In northeast OH I had my first yard juncos this morning. But I saw
some at my favorite park a few miles away on Sept. 27. Go figure.

Also had my first white-throated sparrow of the season this morning.

Lanny, still no Junco sightings here at the farm. Lots of Goldfinches
hitting the socks and some Chipping Sparrows but no Tree Sparrows seen
either. The trees in these parts are at 90% color and the leaves are
falling with each breeze. The weatherman says rain in the forecast this
weekend which will really bring them down. The soybeans are being harvested
and the Asian Ladybugs are trying to get in the house. We have had three
days of 60 degree daytime temps and the 50's at night which has woke up a
few sleeping crickets which were chirping last night when I took the pup out
for a nature break. We saw 3 robins fly up as we turned the corner down the
road from the house so they a still around. Noticed several Turkey Buzzards
floating on the thermals as we drove into town. Must be slowly heading
south. The Cardinals have been visiting the hanging tray feeder along with
the other regulars and the Red Bellied, Hairy and Downey Woodpeckers know
where the suet cakes are located. So far no blackbirds, grackles or
starlings either. The Tufted Titmice and Chickadees are here for the winter
(I don't think they leave either). Currently 65 degrees and the DH is out
mowing the leaves into mulch.

Fran....just somebuddy else in North Central Ohio.

Similar sightings here also. Today we've seen Juncos, WT Sparrows, many Robins,
and the ever present Chickadees, Cardinals, WB Nuthatches, and Downy Woodpeckers.
We're finally receiving much needed rain, but maybe too late to help the trees
display their full fall color. A lot of our fall color is laying on the lawn.
