Tonight I went to Erin's Pub, here in St. John's, Newfoundland,
from 8:30 p.m. to 12:45 a.m. and heard a set by Hugh Scott
and two sets from Jason Simms, John Barela and Patrick Moran.

Hugh has a big singing voice and played guitar, although he is
also adept on mandolin and flute. Jason played guitar and
sang, John Barela played bass and sang some, and Patrick
Moran played fiddle and sang a little

Next weekend Hugh Scott and John Barela will play, and
Hallowe'en weekend a new band called Military Road
(Andrew LeDrew, Kalem Mahoney, Mike Hanrahan
and Robert Kelly) will play.

Hugh was filling in for Anthony McDonald.

Both weeks Anthony McDonald will play from 7:30 p.m.
to 10 p.m. Probably there will be a best costume
contest the night of Oct. 31.

Anthony plays just on Saturday nights; on Fridays from
6 to 8 Boyd Chubbs plays and on Fridays from 8:30
to 10:30 there is a traditional session hosted by
Graham Wells. There is no cover at Erin's except
for New Year's Eve, Paddy's Day week, and
rare fundraisers.

Last night I was at Erin's to hear Dave Panting (he plays
there every Thursday from 9:30 to 12:30, no cover)
and I hear from bartender Pam that owner Ralph O'Brien
has decided to have a $7 cover Oct. 30 and 31 and
probably a $5 cover on Fridays and Saturdays after that.

I heard at Erin's that they will charge cover on Friday
and Saturday only when the band has three or more
members, not when it is a duo or solo act.
