Sean is the J.D.Salinger, Harper Lee or Margaret Mitchell of Irish
heraldists. Having written one great piece he never lets us forget
it...
Richard, I don't think that's fair. Salinger and Lee can hardly be
described as seeking public attention, let alone praise.
(For the record, I take nothing away from the importance of Sean's
debunking of Terence McCarthy, or McCartney, or whatever may be his
real name. It took hard work, determination, and more than a little
moral courage. I just find it unnecessary for him to keep reminding
us of it quite so insistently.) |

Joe these kinds of stories are very important as a public service for
all those who enter into the world of titles and heraldry. These
stories often have a lot of branches that make good investigative
discussion. I think what Sean does is actually good for Irish
heraldry - the OCHI obviously has to be pushed: they keep lapsing back
into the flakiness that got the office stuck in the first place and
that alone is bad for Irish heraldry. |

I'm sorry to hear that and hope Sean is feeling better. A pity he
couldn't commemorate the historic moment, given that many of us may
have forgotten about it in the month or so since he last reminded us.

And what a weary attempt at sarcasm! Like at least one other poster here
in the past, I could never understand why an individual so tainted by
association with the Mac Carthy Mór and allied scandals as Mr Gillespie
should have been appointed Chief Herald of Ireland. This did nothing for
the cause of Irish heraldry, which I admit to me is primarily a matter
of heritage and scholarship rather than vain efforts to enhance one's
prestige through pretence or cash payments.

So what's wrog with 'vain efforts to enhance one's prestige through
pretence'? Sounds like a good idea to me. |

[ prestige through pretence ]
That's been the problem all along isn't it? Therein lies the rub in
its entirety in my view: you can notice it; just don't say anything. |

Ah! Vanity! Vanity! All is vanity! But what would life be like if it
were not for human folly? Other people's follies are what keep us
amused. We tend not to look at own own.
Of course, I have none (just for the record) |

The impending retirement of the Chief Herald should also provide an
opportunity to review the treatment of records in his custody. As I have
before recommended and now recommend again:
'It would be preferable if the records of Ulster’s Office and the
Genealogical Office were treated as separate classes and placed under
the direct administration of the Keeper of Manuscripts of the National
Library, who hopefully could arrange for them to be properly sorted,
catalogued and in time digitised.'
